Pros & Cons from a previous BMW M owner

First I want to start by saying the ZL1 is an amazing car and is hands down better than any BMW M. I previously had an F10 M5 with the DCT and a dual clutch is just quicker shifting than the 10 speed in the ZL1. That said the 10 speed is fast. My only real complaint is I don't have the option to put the Camaro into Performance Shift Mode as the car decides when to do this on its own. The DCT still allows you to select the shift profile when you want and it provides a very satisfying feeling when it "slams" into the next gear that the Camaro doesn't have.

That said...that is literally the only *very slight* drawback. I agree with previous comments that on a track I don't think you will want to manually shift the 10 speed anyway...too many gears and in performance shift mode it stays pretty aggressive.

Here are the HUGE upsides. I compared it to the Shelby GT350 and the M4 during my purchase decision and the Camaro what the clear winner in the end...and from the outside with was the clear #3 at the beginning of the search. I will say this car is as advertised and will not disappoint--all the reviews are spot on!

The other big piece that isn't talked about much, but is very surprising is how good the PTM is in the Chevys. If you are familiar with traction control and M Dynamic Modes you will know that BMW is rather binary. Way too much intervention and feeling the car is being held back when traction control is on, even in dynamic mode. The other option is completely off...which in many cases also isn't what you want as the cars are way too biased towards oversteer. They are predictable, but that line is a bit too close.

PTM leaves you with the feeling it is giving you absolutely everything it can right up until the limit...this is by far the most graceful system out there. It lets you drive the car and does its best to stay out of the way...it's AMAZING.

The magnetic ride control dampers are also next level stuff. I wanted a car I can drive in the Canyons in Southern California AND do track days. You will not find another system that goes between street driving and on track as easily as this one. I did consider the 1LE, and the spool valve dampers are next level tech for the track, but they can be too harsh if you want to enjoy on the street as well...my opinion. For some they want the all out track performance and for them the 1LE is the right choice without question.

My advice - buy this car and you will not regret it! You will easily pay 3X the price to get the same level of performance. I travel to Europe alot and I can say the Camaro will stand out from the crowd there...you rarely see anything like it. It's loud and aggressive (it doesn't always have to be loud ) and is sheer driving enjoyment. You can go out and embarrass the exotics at the track...trust me, you will because the performance is so much more accessible in this car.

Hope this helps...send me a message if you have any other questions.

Thanks a lot guys for all the comments.
I am really looking forward to purchasing one.
As I am, I would really like the 1LE but it is out of budget. Will probably add the aero package little by little later on .
USD is really strong now, which makes the purchase more expensive
Can you explain how the sales tax works in the USA?
I understand all prices on Autotrader are exluding sales tax.
Does it apply also if I buy from a private seller?
Since I will trailer and export the car straight away, should I be charged sales tax?
Because here in Europe it does not apply if car is exported and sales tax will be charged at destination.
Since tax is 20% here, I don't want to pay it twice, being even 5/7 %...
Is there a state with no sales tax?
Thanks!

you only pay sales tax where the car is registered I believe. So if you are exporting it, i don't think you'd pay any. I'm not an expert, so maybe someone else can confirm that. But if I buy a car out of state, I don't pay sales tax there, I pay when I bring it back to my state and register it.

oh, really? I have very same plan as DavidStrLondon to bring one to EU. I was doing research on net and read somewhere that non-citizen can't buy new car, only preowned. Also they said, even if I ask us-friend to buy one, sales-tax has to be paid. They said there is state with zero-tax but land transport would be more expensive then.
I didn't check that deeper cause I am going to take 1yo preowned car, but if you say so you didn't pay tax during purchase, but during registration, that makes sense and probably I've read incorrect informations.

I have a few questions on different options/variants and hope you can help.
Do all ZL1 have PDR?
Do all ZL1 have noise valves on the exhaust?or just the Auto?Or is it an option?
Do all the ZL1 have magnetic ride dampers?
Now a question A10 trans. How does it compare with a DCT?
On my list a ported TB,Rotofab CAI,upper pulley, headers and full Borla Exhaust.
However I am new in the supercharger world and I am worried about high intake temps and overheating.
Is that going to be a problem with those mods?
Thanks a lot for now!
Isn't there an issue with the ZL1 meeting European safety standards? I thought the front splitter was too low for pedestrian impact regulations.

It's only about 1LE and yeah - its about front splitter + rear wheels wider than body + rear wing.
Not that bad actually, I would say, you could drive with aero pack (like a lot of "tuned" cars with aftermarket elements sticked), just those rear wheels would bring problems, so regular ZL1 ones should be put on.

Hi,

My ZL1 is now in a vessel coming to Spain.

The ZLE is banned in EU, and as Lafourche1 said, before registering the car you should unmount the splitter. If you don’t, law says pedestrians can be injured so they won’t let you register it.

Obviously after you can mount it again...

I talked to a company that does registration and legalization here in the UK.
The canards and rear wing are the issues but they found a way around it...

Akura, exactly!
It only can be taking them off for registration and once per year for inspection, then put them back and just drive Kind of inconvenient but still worth it! Same thing with those 1LE's wide rear wheels but this case will make police pull over.
BTW I saw SS and ZL1 with added 1LE aero packs here... But not real ZL1 1LE yet!
