The self oil change is a crucial part of "real car guyness".
The rationale for it is usually quoting horror stories, cost and time savings. It's either you do it on your own, or abandon your car at mercy of some careless kids. Of course you could buy your own oil and filter, pull into non-shady lube shop, and watch 2 guys change it in few minutes for $15 or so. No cheating, crushed rockers, overfills or whatever. |

Anyone paying less than $60 at the shop for an oil change is not getting the best oil. That is fine if you don't care about your engine much or drive very slow.
I buy 10 qt of Mobil 1 full synthetic for around $50 and the oil filter is another $10 (depending on the brand it could be more or less, I usually go AC Delco or Mobil 1). Mobil had a special mail in rebate in May, where you receive $12 for a 5 qt and $17 for a 5 qt and 1 oil filter. I just cashed my $29 check.

Yep I don't trust anyone else to. I try to do everything I can on my car by myself. Only way i'll take it to the dealer is for major warranty stuff.

Yeah sure do and have been changing oil in my cars and truck for probably 40 or more years. I know it's been done right when I do it myself!

it easier and is less time consuming to change it myself. plus while i am waiting on the drain, i can check the fluids, crawl around underneath to see if there are any leaks, see that all of the axle bolts are still there and tight, see how much meat is left on the brakes, see how the tires are wearing etc, etc. then screw on a new PF64 and pour in 10 new qts of Edge 5w30.

ALWAYS change it myself.
Much cheaper, and I have a peace of mind knowing everything’s done the right way. Speaking of changing oils, I am going to change the motor oil and rear diff fluid tonight.

Well since you asked...
I do my own oil changes. Nobody's gonna lay hands on my mistress but me.
Here you go. https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/15/2304 (c) Waiver of standards The performance of the duties under subsection (a) shall not be required of the warrantor if he can show that the defect, malfunction, or failure of any warranted consumer product to conform with a written warranty, was caused by damage (not resulting from defect or malfunction) while in the possession of the consumer, or unreasonable use (including failure to provide reasonable and necessary maintenance). So it's the converse of this... Warrantor is obligated to fix things the consumer did not break due to unreasonable use or failure to perform maintenance.

When changing your oil, the only thing more important than using a jackstand is to have a cold case of beer. Makes it kinda fun.

I'm not that lazy, and I'm a millennial. I change the fluids on my Camaro..... kind of why I got into cars... I like working on stuff, whether its putting a set of headers on, changing the oil, or giving it a nice detail. Goes hand and hand with being a gearhead, imo.
