The "Basic" plan is free for 5 years with the new car purchase. After 5 years, you gotta pay. |

What if we wrap the entire car in tin foil lol ?
All kidding aside, it is potentially scary about possible privacy breaches in modern cars in general. I've heard of cases where the police have legally seized the "black box" (not sure of the technical jargon) from cars which can prove whether or not you hit the brakes prior to a collision. The gist of the case was a guy claimed he tried to brake at a red light prior to a collision. It was raining so no skid marks to prove one way or the other. There was a court fight to see who "owned" the computer record (the owner refused to authorize the release of the data) and long story short the police won the right to access the data. Not surprisingly it proved no braking prior to collision and the guy was convicted with the main "witness" against him was his own car. One of the advantages of my vintage british sports cars lol. No electronics whatsoever. Not that I ever do anything bad of course........ |

Even after you go to the website to disable "Smart Driver" tracking, your next monthly health report will reactivate it. You have to turn it off after each health report runs. Happens on both of our active SpyStar vehicles.
Been disabling this monthly for about 6 months now. As soon as the email with the health report arrives, showing active, I get back on the site and disable it again. |

The best thing to do is to remove your OnStar radio transponder. It's a circuit board located under the dash behind the glovebox. You can remove it and not lose any other functionality of your car. You will just have zero OnStar communication capability, either sending or receiving. You eliminate OnStar completely. You will lose all health report capability, automatic accident reporting, and theft tracking.
But you will gain peace of mind. It was just reported last week that GM intends to expand OnStars capabilities and create a bigger business model for the brand. The plan is to eventually have ads and information that pop up on your info screen that cater to you. You park at your local grocery store parking lot once per week right? You'll see an ad for $1.00 off a loaf of bread at your favorite grocery store pop up. Like a certain restaurant? You can have a free appetizer when you order two entrees. Drive the same way home from work every single day? You might want to stop and get your car washed at the car wash on the way. 20% off a full service wash and wax. Listen to a certain radio station a lot? You might get reminders to tune in to 94.9 at 5:00 for the 5 at 5 even while you're listening to another station or your iPhone. Not sure if this helps but:
Long press on the antenna icon, then go to privacy settings, and turn off location services. ![]() ![]() ![]() Sent from my MI 6 using Tapatalk |

Disconnecting on star does not stop the on board hard drive from recording the vehicle operation. The black box is federally mandated. It records the last 1 hour of driving. in 2020 it will record the last 24 hours. This is part of the ECM and can not be disconnected,,,

EDRs record anywhere from 2.5 to 25 of the previous SECONDS of vehicle operation. They aren’t federally mandated as there are still a few cars made without them. And lastly you don’t have to worry unless you are at fault in a serious accident that results in severe property damage, life altering injuries, or death of anyone involved. It takes a lot of litigation and either sending out for an engineer from the manufacturer to come to the car to pull the data, or your city invest in a $5,000 Bosch data analyzer - which I know the purchase of would never fly in my city. 24 hours of operation????? Do you know how many pages of data that would be and how much space it would need to record? At least 5 terabytes. The data from 5 seconds of vehicle operation is 20 pages and a couple hundred megabytes. They don’t use hard drives as you are thinking of anyway - with the temperature extremes and constant shocks from vibrations the drive would be dead in a week. They use EEPROMs |
