If GM bought out Ford

I wonder if they would continue the Mustang. If by then it's some kind of electric hybrid and under-engineered as usual they would have to start over from scratch.

I think it would be worth it if it finally got a good platform to ride on for a change and GM maintained the classic body lines that people associate with the Mustang.

Or maybe they could maintain Ford's "buy it cheap, mod it later" philosophy and let the chrome pony sell itself like it always has.

Outside the fact that this is ludicrous, the DOJ would sue the merger on the grounds of antitrust and it would wind up in court where the merger would ultimately be denied. All the while both companies stocks, and reputation, would take a tumble.

Ford is still family owned. Imagine a dystopian future if a GM or anyone owned Ford other than a Ford.

That would have happened in the old America. Not in the current Dystopia we live in. But you are right the stocks will still tumble.

DOJ is just wrapping up a trial for AT&T/TWC. Granted, there's a well-founded idea that it's because Trump hates CNN, but DOJ is doing that job at the moment.

If GM bought Ford, the Mustang would be redundant. The Camaro and Mustang are direct competitors aimed at the exact same target audience.

Using an internet ISP analogy, this would be like if Charter and Time Warner post-merger would continue to offer homes 2 options for 100 Mbps service each running via different lines. It makes zero business sense to do that. If the company's goal is to burn through money, sure, go for it.

This thread is kind of pointless.

GM will never buy Ford and vice versa.

However, don't put it past GM to buy Jeep from FCA when Sergio Marchionne retires at the end of the year. FCA will be primed for a merger or purchase, and GM - well, anyone really - would love to own Jeep.

Even if this were to happen (maybe the right entities got a satisfactory bribe), GM might overtake Dodge for worst reliability of the three. For them to survive, they'd have to keep Ford away from any manufacturer, sourcing or engineering of parts. And I wish I was joking about that.

If Gm bought Ford I would be more worried about the Camaro than the Mustang. Mustangs are about 10-1 over Camaro's where I live. I'm driving a Unicorn here.......

Yeah they’re bigger today. ..just like AOL and Blockbuster were bigger than their competitors in the 90s. Something is wrong at Ford. Don’t act surprised if this announcement winds up being the tip of the iceberg.

And this thread is no more pointless than another insipid “will they kill the camaro again” post.

not family owned

Ford motor company is not family owned, it is a publicly traded company. Family run yes.
