Except that 2018 1SS 1LEs can be had easily in the $38K-$40K from a whole bunch of high volume dealers.

So it is really what the 2018 SS1LE that you get for ˜$39K will be worth in 3 years, vs what an 8-year old ZL1 that you bought for $41K with a ton of miles will be worth in 3 years.

And how much will all the out of warranty repairs on that ZL1 cost over 3 years?

It's the OPs money - he should buy what he feels is better.

But I have yet to see a performance car, new or used, that is a better value than the 2018 SS1LE with currently available discounts from dealers.

Zero miles, warranty, full leather/alcantara interior, Recaros, 6/4-pot Brembos, Mag Ride, 455HP/TQ, 285s/305s great tires, incredible handling for $40K?

vs

A 5 year-old, 400lbs heavier, out of warranty ZL1 for $41K?

Does not compute.

If I could find a 2018 1SS 1LE close by for $40k it would already be in my garage. The best I've found is $45k OTD, and that's driving 3 hours. Think I just missed out on some factory incentives. Hope some new ones kick in soon.

Except a low mile (10k>) Gen 5 ZL1 can easily be had for around $35k. Which is hands down a better value, factoring in depreciation makes its case even more appealing. As used values for 08+ CTS-V2’s are still hovering in the $30k range, means that the 5 year old ZL1 is likely near bottom of its curve for now to hold value. LSA>LT1

Where as you going to loose $10k+ pretty fast on an ‘18. So it the ‘18 worth an extra $15k+ to get a slightly slower car with less power potential just to have a warranty? Considering the ZL1 drivetrain is largely “bulletproof”, I could easily cover repairs (& upgrades) for significantly less than $15k your throwing out the window.

Doesn’t make sense to me.

What if having the biggest power isn't your priority?

Then there’s no need to tap the potential and leave it at 580

I have a 2ss Camaro convertible but I would take a vette over it everyday of the week. I love my Camaro but vette is my dream car.

I don't know if I would call a car/drivetrain that has only been around 6 years "bulletproof". Granted GM pushrod V8s generally are, I hardly ever saw a ZL1 for sale with over 20-30k miles when I was looking. There are a lot of cars that have deal breaking issues arrive after a few more years and miles. Most 2000 era BMW M cars and V8s come to mind, they are very affordable right now, generally reliable if maintained, but if they haven't had a VANOS rebuild or timing chain replacement, or a few other things, it might not be on the road very long before it needs some work. I'm not saying a ZL1 won't be reliable, I'm saying not enough of them have been driven enough to know for sure yet.

Drivetrain has been out about 10 years now. (CTS-V)

Even 580 vs the 1LE's 455 might not carry "priority status".

Thanks for all the help and advice, guys.

Ended up buying a C7 yesterday. 2016 Shark Gray Metallic Z51 3LT, 2k miles. I keep walking back and forth to the garage just to stare at it. On cloud 9 right now. Will post pics as soon as I come down a little....
