That’s the DEF quality sensor in diesels!?!?

The algorithm is most certainly complicated, but without a sensor of some sort it just seems more like an educated guess than an actual fact. Weird sorry, just got to wrap my head around the fact were using statical data in a complex computer algorithm to determine oil quality without any real time data.

Of course they won't say exactly how it's calculated. They'd rather it remain mystical and magical. Most people will just think "oh, so a computer figures it out". This paragraph caught my eye from the Chevrolet web site:

Engine oil life system
(scroll down to about 1/2 page)

Most Chevrolet vehicles are equipped with the engine Oil Life System (OLS). This system interprets your vehicle’s speed and engine temperature and continuously monitors operating conditions—which helps determine when it’s time for an oil change. The OLS also monitors your personal driving habits and the area’s climate conditions to let you know precisely when to come in for an oil change. As soon as the OLS light comes on, you know it’s time for service. It’s a simple, effective way to save money and help reduce oil waste.
Speed, engine temp, RPMs, miles it can get from the ECM. Only climate sensor I know of is the outside air thermometer. How in the heck do they monitor my "personal driving habits"? I specifically denied Onstar permission to track my driving (disabled Onstar Smart Driver) and I did not install the myChevrolet app after reading the EULA - in the fine print it gives them permission to monitor and record location and speed, among other things.

It's not being paranoid if they actually are plotting against you.

So my 17 ZL1 I checked the oil at 2000 miles and it used a full quart, I took it for the first oil change at 2800 miles and told the dealer that it used 1 quart at 2K, they checked it and gave me a log sheet stating to keep an eye on oil and if it uses oil do not put any oil in it, take it back to the dealer so they can verify the oil consumption they stated ZL1 should not use oil espically with only 2K miles.

I’m wondering if those having consumption issues changed the engine oil @ 500 or @1500 miles?

Informative if we knew

Build date
Miles before changed ( since intial changed should occur no later than 1500 miles)
Tracked vs Not

Look at my Oil Life Monitor. The miles and percents are really screwy. It thinks I am sitting in traffic going nowhere when it is really just sitting in the garage

Hi, that does not have anything to do with your Oil capacity. That is the oil life indicator that measures runtime, commute time and overall driving that determines a oil life cycle.

It’s is all about Service making $$. Even when your car is sitting it is losing life.

So then a ZL1 in storage for 6 months will still lose 6 months of its life even though the motor oil itself is just fine.

The fuel in the oil doesn’t degrade it over time?

I understand what you are saying. Eventually oil in an opened can will deteriorate, but I would think it would be ok for maybe longer than a year if it was low miles like mine.

Yes oil life is based on time? From my understanding the engine makes the oil corrosive over time. Oil should be changed once a year at min.

Here is what they say for oil that has never been opened.
