Boring doesn't equate to better. I can't begin to count the number times someone in a better world changing econopod flies past me speeding burning more gas than me while I'm cruising along. If they were really interested in preserving gas they would be doing the posted speed limits.

  • The GLOBAL automotive market is approaching 100 million vehicles / year
  • CARS... everything from SMARTFORTWO to Bentley Mulsanne accounts for about 40% of whatever the total is in any given year, so that would be about 40 million cars. I am NOT including SPORTS CARS in that number....that will come later
  • UTILITY VEHICLES, excluding VANS account for about 35% and growing, so thats about 35 million utilities in any given year, and going up each year
  • PICKUP TRUCKS account for about 6% and almost all of that is in North America, so roughly 6 million pickups a year in North America
  • SPORTS CARS....everything from Miata to Bugatti Chiron account for 600 - 700,000 a year GLOBALLY. Camaro, Corvette, Mustang, 370Z, pick-a-Porsche (except utes) are all included in that GLOBAL total. Oddly, Challenger and Charger are typically NOT included in this category. They are categorized as LARGE CARS like Impala and Taurus. Splitting the performance models out from the grocery getters is basically picking fly-poop from ground pepper.

So, if you are managing a company that sells about 3 million CARS a year, and about 3.5-4 million UTILITIES and PICKUPS a year and about 80,000 SPORTS CARS a year, and you're competing against companies with similar product splits, where are you going to put your advertising dollars?

The focus for sports cars is on identifying who those 80,000 potential buyers are, as well as the buyers for your competitors and focus marketing efforts in those places, where people already considering products like yours are likely to hang out. Like Daytona and other NASCAR events....like competing for Indianapolis 500 Pace Car....like introducing new models at Pebble Beach....like auctioning off S/N 001 of important models at Barrett-Jackson. Doing TV ads that millions view but only a few thousand actually care about is money NOT well spent.

Unfortunately your wisdom will not resonate with the people that need a really cool commercial to validate their car......especially with Vin Diesel or the Rock.....wait Fiat and Ford have them. DAMN IT!

I hate commercials. Glad GM limits them for performance cars. It's one less I have to suffer through.

Perhaps market research shows that buyers stick to the brand they started out with - likely something they either chose as a kid or their parents got them into.

At that point, it makes little sense to spend money on marketing since your marketing is likely to be ineffective.

I think most of the media and such you see about mustang (compared to camaro) has to do with how the mustang is marketed internationally, while the camaro is not really. And so, the mustang benefits from marketing because other non-US markets dont have the history with the car.

I wish they'd market it more so it sold more and didn't get cancelled again, but at the same time, i know none of that marketing would have ever influenced my decision on buying a camaro. So i get why they aren't spending the cash on the ads.

True while it might not make sense to make a Camaro specific commercial or advertising program, they could at least make the car a bit more featured. First thing that needs to go is the real people ads, they are awful.

Now as far as do people really cross shop them, yes people do. I have told this story many times here, buddy of mine got his first really good paying job and wanted to get himself a nice car. Was looking at SRT8 Challengers, and ended up choosing an Infinity G37. Similar price range, two totally different cars.

Another buddy of mine, his dream car was Trans Am WS-6. Since the time he was 13 that was his dream car, (now the car getting axed didn't help) but he ended up in an 04 Cobra after test driving one instead of a low mileage WS-6.

To be honest i watch more commercials on YouTube then Cable TV. The real people ads Chevy are pretty lame and annoying to say the least but there are a hell of a lot of them playing pushing those Chevy Trucks and SUV's. I just picked up a new GM Acadia Denali in January and to be totally honest i didn't see any commercials that showed them or even pushed me to go look at it. YouTube gave me most of the answers and videos i can ask for plus the knowledge and technical aspects of that SUV compared to others as i was shopping around. So all in all i feel the commercials only equate to a lower percentage of buyers shopping for cars using that method to boost interest...

"Find new roads" what kind of stupid slogan is that.
I agree, GM's marketing department is lame (at best). They should at least hire someone from this site to write copy for them.

No point in marketing to people who aren't interested. I'm in that "*****" 20-25 y/o bracket and I'll be in the market for a new car come the end of this year. Deciding between a 2SS and a handful of other cars (thinking it's going to be a 2SS). Camaros are simply priced out of the range of most kids my age. Why the hell are they going to drop $30k+ on a car when they either don't give a shit about performance or have a shitload of student loans to pay back and are not making enough money? If they just want a "cool" car, they'll buy a Mustang for much cheaper and talk about that since the general public still equates Mustang to the most badass of the 3. When most can afford the Camaro comfortably, come their late 20s/early 30s, they have families. They're going to be getting big SUVs or trucks, which is the majority of GM's sales.

When you're living on scraps it's much easier to buy an econo slushbox for $18k and get 30+MPG than it is to buy into a more refined car like a Camaro. Doesn't stop us car guys who got good jobs out of college, but you gotta think of the norm. Most people looking at this gen Camaro are either older or are so engrossed in cars, they understand why the Camaro is worth the premium over a Mustang or Challenger from having done their own research, instead of having a commercial or a dealership tell them "hey, this scatpack is just like a 2SS, but it's over $7k cheaper after incentives!"

Not only that but GM commercials are already shit, don't have them make the Maros and Vettes look bad haha

According to a recent top gear show , a pickup truck is sold every 28 seconds in the United States. And SUVs aren't far behind that. You're not gonna find GM or anybody else put their money behindone of the specialty cars, when the bang for your buck for the millions the TV cost is going to go to the largest audience, the pickup truck guys.Or the umbrella/broad-based "guess how many awards we won" campaign…
