Car is still in storage...But I have two stories to share...you all will get a kick out of this.
Before I begin...I have hesitated to post this for a few weeks...finally, I decided it was too good a story to not share, so instead, I'll just lay down some ground rules...NO COP BASHING. All people get a little "gung-ho" at times, and make mistakes...I'm not pissed. One Sunday morning, about noon, my brother comes bounding down the stairs to tell me that there's a cop walking up the driveway. A great many thoughts immediately came to mind...but I couldn't think of what in the world I'd have done wrong, or why else he could be there. There was no damage, break-ins, etc...What made it more interesting is that when I looked out the front window, the patrol vehicle was for a police department several towns over... So I go to the side door of the house (exits into the driveway), and I see nobody outside. At this point I'm confused, because there was no doorbell, no knock, no phone call...and the SUV is still out front, but no one is in it. The only other place he could be is in my backyard, near the garage. So I grab my shoes and decide to head out back towards the garage, find the guy and say "hello." Once around the side of the garage, as I approach, I noticed the shed doors were wide open. My shed is attached to the back of the garage, and there is a pass-through doorway to the garage itself. This is very weird, because although I hadn't locked it the night before, I KNOW that I "dummy locked" it. That is, passing the bolt through the doors and pretending like the lock was doing something...the doors shouldn't have been open. Now, I know better than to enter a dark, confined space with a police officer (or anyone with a gun for that matter), so I made some loud noises with my feet as I approached, and called out "hello?" I notice the officer leaving my garage via that pass-through doorway, and now walking towards me inside the shed, he says "Hi! Just checking out that gray Camaro." And I immediately think: "WTF?!?" Instead...I asked politely, "Why? And how can I help you?" He proceeds to explain to me that he is an officer with such-and-such a down, investigating a hit-and-run accident that occurred there two nights ago. The car that ran was a gray, 2018 Camaro, and had some serious front-end damage. According to the county, there are only two gray 2018 Camaros registered here...and mine is one of them.....You've got to be kidding me......I asked how he knew it was a 2018, and he said they recovered some parts of the car from the scene, specifically a piece of the front end, and an RS badge. On the back of the RS badge was molded a julian calendar that indicated the part was made in September of 2017. Immediately relaxed (because that's impossible that it's my car; a) because it's been parked since Thanksgiving, and b) because it's a ZL1), I told him the same, and asked if he wanted me to open the garage door to see better. At first he declined, and then as we spoke, he asked if I wouldn't mind opening the door, he said at least he could compare the parts and get a clearer idea of what the car might look like that he's searching for. He went back to his SUV, as I opened the garage door and pulled the cover up off the front end. This is the first time I've seen Erebus' face since I put him away for the winter...really made me wish for the summer back. When the officer came back, he had an evidence bag with a piece of front fascia (from around the drivers' side headlight), and the "RS" badge. We confirmed the colors were the same, where the badge should go, and some more information about the car. It was at this point that he told me they had already visited the house of the other vehicle. No vehicle visible, no answer to the phone, no answer to the doorbell, and nobody apparently home. After this was all settled and he was about to leave, I asked how he was able to legally enter my garage like that without my consent...He suddenly became a little uncomfortable, and explained something about a premise search, and being an felony (hit-and-run), someone could have been hurt, and the doors were unlocked so he thought I was in there, and nobody answered when he called. ![]() I said thanks, and later that day I called his department lieutenant. He returned my call a few days later and said that he spoke with the officer, and reminded him he couldn't do stuff like that. He said I had every right to be concerned, confirmed that the officer was an investigator legitimately working on this case, and that the officer claimed to have rang the doorbell, knocked, but no answer. He proceeded to say that had I been the bad guy, and this case gone to court, any decent defense attorney would immediately get the case thrown out on the grounds of an illegal search. He said - "We want to win these cases, and that wouldn't help." Apparently, the officer I met is really enthusiastic about closing hit-and-run cases. He is a very nice guy, but very determined to solve these cases. I asked if they had caught the guy yet, and he said they found the car, but not the suspect. He's had jail-time in the past, a warrant out for his arrest for something else, two DWIs, and is a registered sex-offender. ![]() Now, both of these gentlemen were wonderfully nice the entire time. And I really had no inclination to demand he leave the property, or chastise him for invading my privacy, etc....I did nothing wrong, and I had nothing to hide. In fact, the whole time I found it kind of interesting, and was eager to help find whatever loser ran from the accident. It truly never is a dull moment, being a Camaro owner........ ![]() In other news....I am SOOooooo done with winter. And I am stocked up and ready for track season to start! I'm registered for the Camaro Fest group - Pocono track day in May (see more info HERE), Mid-Ohio in June, Camaro Fest & NCM Motorsports Park in July, Pittsburg International in August, and Watkins Glen in September. Can't. Wait!!!! |

Interesting story. Well played. I am a staunch Constitutionalist, I may have reacted with just a bit more concern.
At least you had some face time with your baby. ![]() BTW, if there is a shortage of Mobil 1 and Valvoline 15W-50, DOT4 BF and Delco diff fluid.... We know who is hording. ![]() Looks like some awesome seat time at some epic tracks for you this season. Enjoy my friend!
