Groaning?

Any of you with 1LEs dealing with the now infamous diff Groan? I only have 500 miles but am dreading what seems to be an imminent issue. I hate dealerships and want to avoid taking it there for anything.

We don't have the same diff groan issue described by other users on the forum, as the groan occurs in the normal SS model, and on the 1LE we inherit the rear diff from the ZL1.

That being said I would certainly reccomend changing the rear diff oil at 1500, and make sure to use the OEM replacement oil (10-4034, you can find it on amazon for ~$18 a bottle, you'll need 2.)

Really? Thanks much for the info, I had no idea we had a different differential! Yet another reason I'm glad I went with the 1LE.

Do you happen to know the differences between the two? Is the standard SS diff an e-diff? Most people assume the 1LE has same drive train as SS except for brakes, suspension tuning, wheels, tires, and some electronic applications.

I don't think it is an e-diff, no.

But yeah, thats why when I grabbed some diff oil from the dealer, I just told them I have a ZL1.. Makes it easier than trying to explain lol. Had it in the dealer last week and had the guy ask if it was an automatic, and if I got the hood wrapped somewhere..

Little known model for even the dealers, despite a ZL1 1LE sitting on their showroom floor.

Only the ZL1 and the 1LE have the e-diff as of right now. Also, be cautious on the highway, you DO NOT want to cruise at any set speeds while breaking in your diff. Vary your RPMs and speed, this will prevent groaning at certain speeds later.

Ooh, good to know. I did take it on some highway cruises, but tried to vary my speed and run through a couple gears. On my at 500 miles, so will pay closer attention to that.

Yeah, I can't stand dealerships which is why I try to avoid them at all costs. Heck, when I picked mine up at delivery, some kid drove it to the front and parked in a spot barely missing the front splitter on a curb. I mean like centimeters. I don't even think he realised nor cared that there was a big splitter on the front. He basically drove it until the front tire hit the curb stop. No need to park that far into a space. Salesman said, oops, that was almost really bad....

Dealerships are the worst. I was very close to extending my M3's warranty with BMW, which I do not have to say is VERY expensive.

My last trip to the dealership for my final free service, when I picked the car up the freaking oil light was still on because they 'forgot' to change the oil.

It's what I brought the car in for, and the warning light beeps at you when you turn the car on and off. Still have no clue how this happened. Replied to a survey stating they were a liability, and I would be taking my car to an Indy shop from now on.

I actually got a reply from the service manager, something along the lines of "That was minor, why are you upset?"

Most of them are completely clueless and over worked. They don't have time to give a crap about your car.

Nope. I changed my diff fluid around 2100 miles to get rid of all the break in filings. Haven't changed since then but I probably will again before this coming season.
