My two cents worth on this depreciation topic. First of all, as has been mentioned, buy as low as possible. You be the one who buys the one year old Camaro as if you are buying a stock (buy low sell high theory). I bought a one year old 2016 2SS A8 for $33,500 which had a sticker of $45,000. The car had 1990 miles on it. Depreciated $11,500. I was patient and kept checking on line for the best pricing. I wasn’t in a hurry. Took my time price shopping and I knew what I wanted. So, if it continues to depreciate, I don’t care because it’s a keeper in my mind. It ain’t going anywhere. It stays in my garage. Also, today car sales in general are declining. Pick-up trucks and SUVs are the hot items right now. Check any car one year old and see how much they depreciate. People don’t want them. They wants trucks. Those vehicles are holding their value. That’s the market folks. Simple as that. So your CAR (Camaro) just isn’t in demand. Car sales in 2017 we’re down. Pick-up trucks were up over 10% versus the previous year. So, knowing this, buy smart and don’t think it’s a collectors item after the first few years. It’s not. But to me, a car enthusiast, it’s a damn bargain. Where the heck can you find the kind of value, if you buy smart, for the price of a one year old Gen6 Camaro.

All good advice. There is large used car dealer around here that has a very good slogan.
"Everyone drives a used car" Oh how true do people find that out that try and get out from under a car that is less than 1 year or two old.

You saved $2.5k by buying used. The remaining 2016s had a 20% discount

$45k - 20% = $36K (you paid $33.5k)

Valid point, American cars offer hefty rebates. I bought a new F-150 in 2012, truck had a sticker price of $43K or there about, paid around $31K for it with all the rebates Ford offered at the time. So yeah, rebates can offset the depreciation a lot on a new car. You don't tend to see it offered as much with Foreign car makers.

Rebates and discounts don't offset depreciation. They contribute to it. Regardless of how the guy paided 33k for his Camaro, he got over 11grand off a new one. That really shows that these cars are tanking. If they needed to offer 20% off, that alone shows them tanking. Anyone would be crazy to buy one of these new unless they dont mind losing a shitload of money.
There are a lot of these cars around right now new with pretty deep discounts. That seems to be the only way these cars are moving off the lot.

a car is not an investment? You are not expected to get any return....

We're not talking about getting a return. We're talking about minimizing the losses on a depreciating asset. Some people don't care about losing thousands on the front side. I think its smart for some to end up with the same car as the guy the bought new for many thousands less. It makes all of us that bought new look like idiots. Ive been getting away from new toys. Tired of loosing on something that isnt making me money.
