I take all side roads to and from work and every morning I get behind someone doing the speed limit but mostly below. I usually drive 5 over the limit and can't get irritated with the folks driving at the speed limit just because I want to go faster.

When I feel I have to pass I wait for a passing zone so at least I am passing legally. There has been a time or two where I was impatient and passed outside of a passing zone. The frustration for me is moving from the Washington DC area to Raleigh, NC where EVERYTHING is at a slower pace.

Now about those cars that don't come with turn signals... don't get me started on that!

Same where I live. I pass across double yellow at least twice per day because of people driving 15-20 under. Once I passed someone in front of a school for going the school zone speed of 15 mph which is in effect 7:00 AM-6:00 PM schooldays. This was at 6:30 AM, on a Saturday, mid-July. Oh, and I'm 60. Guess us old bastards don't have much patience either.

Finally one day I woke up and decided (or realized) it just wasn't worth it. I dreaded driving, and my stress levels were through the roof. And for what? So I could get to my destination minutes (more likely seconds) sooner? Just not worth it. Ever since, I have been much much happier about driving - even when I have to deal with the kinds of drivers you are complaining about.

One thing that helped me was to put myself in the shoes of other drivers. As mentioned above, maybe they are older. Perhaps they have had a bad day and are distracted (which is its own problem). Maybe they are a newer driver or are just not yet comfortable driving at the speeds you or I like to drive. I think back to the times when I had to drive with a very bad migraine, and I know for a fact I drove slower.

Fact is we all have to share the road together, and it is our responsibility to do so safely - getting angry and speeding past people aggressively just because they aren't driving the way you want them to is selfish, unsafe and not worth a possible accident. Truthfully, it also kind of makes you look like an a-hole. Even if you could have gotten to your destination 5 minutes sooner, is it worth the stress, anger and unsafe driving? No, it's not.

I know we drive fast cars, that beg to be driven faster - but when you encounter these situations, just chill out... breathe in... breathe out. Know that you will still get to where you're going.

Drive safe, and be excellent to each other.
Wise words indeed. It took me quite a while to learn this too. Especially when people that need to exit the highway and speed up in the left lane prior to swerving three lanes over and exiting. I guess their motto is “if you ain’t first, you’re last!” Of course, they only get to the bottom of the exit at the same time as the rest of us that drove slower and had the patience to stay in the right lane prior to the exit.

Here in Cali the morons drive in the left lane doing under the speed limit and most of the time is the gay Prius. "slower traffic keep right" I could care less if they drove 20 mph in the slow lane... They way i see it, if you cant do the speed limit you shouldn't be driving on the interstate. What about the asshole that stops at the bottom of the off ramp, talk about stupid!

"Keep right except to pass" is not followed in VA. Very irritating...

Driving slow

The only thing more stupid than driving to slow is people crossing double yellows lines to pass.

I live in the land of 55 speed limits on our freeways and sometimes 60. Prius and Subaru's abound (not the fast kind). Many drive right at the limit or below, especially on the secondary roads. We also have our share of wet days, so that has to be taken into account.

Now I love my muscle car, but I wouldn't pass by going over the yellow lines. And I find getting upset just isn't the way to spend my time. Pass if I can safely where allowed, just ride it out if I cant. Don't stress about it. I know sometimes when I do get a chance to pass, they might be wondering who is that crazy old white haired guy in that loud Camaro :-)

Driving on the left lane; express or passing lane at under the speed limit can be irritating. But someone not driving the speed limit in other lanes, yes it's irritating but you can't fault them.

Speed limit is just that, the max speed allowed by the rules. If someone decides to go 5 or 10 under, it's their right. Someone else mentioned it earlier, just remember you could be scaring the heck out of someones mother, grandparent, child, other sibling, etc. You also don't know what their reaction may be once they get scared, and none of us want to be responsible for an accident to others let alone bad injuries or worse.

Passing someone doing 20 under in a 45 in a 1000 ft stretch isn't an issue for those of us able to pay attention to what's going on around them. You don't do it 50 ft before a blind curve.

Yeah I won't be complaining if someone wants to do the limit or under in the right lanes. Often times though there are minimum speeds, but unfortunately they are not posted.

But if someone gets scared because you passed them enough to lose control of their car, it's on them. They can't handle what it takes to drive a car safely on the road. I give leeway to student drivers, but that's it. One should never be scared by what another driver is doing because you should have situational awareness of your surroundings.

Then it wouldn't be a double yellow under those conditions.

A double yellow is a double yellow. Not for you to decide if its safe to go, because of your superior driving skills
