Trade 1LE for ZL1?
Apologies if there is a thread about this (Please link me).
I've been considering a trade on a 2018 ZL1 stickered at 56k I believe my 1LE is worth about 32-35k (Not sure, as I have 11.6k miles and I drive A LOT, so it increases fast). I have 35k left to make on payments. I originally wanted to keep this car forever and pass it down a generation or two, as it's my first car and my dream car. Lots of sentiment here.. But my original plan was to go fully built motor and maybe eventually add single/twin turbos. I understand that in that build, I'll be over ZL1 pricing. Should I hunker down and just trade upwards? I'm no good at math- so maybe with my trade, I'll have ended up losing more money vs keeping it and sticking with my build goals. I'm just throwing around the thought at this point, so I don't have any solid info or thoughts. I'd appreciate everyone's input. Please tell me if this can work or if it's just dumb. |

If you were planning on going all-motor keep the 1LE. If you want to add FI get the ZL1.

Only in Boca Raton do we have people buying 45k cars for their first car. ;P
What do you want to DO with the car? How old are you? Are you looking to impress other people, or impress yourself? Do you want to track the car? Drag race? Weekend cruiser? (probably not since you've already got 11k on the existing 1LE). Not one of us NEEDS a camaro. Its something that we want so if you can afford it and you want a ZL1, just go buy it. You obviously have absolutely zero plan of attack here so im going to venture a guess and say that you probably dont have a clear cut objective in mind. Work out a build price sheet. If you end up spending 20k on the 1LE then you may want to just trade up to the ZL1 for a worry free life, ie a warranty. Otherwise, if you want to make it yours, spend the money incrementally provided you can afford it and enjoy the process. |

I'm a street spirited driver. Track maybe 6 times in a year. 21, don't give a damn about people (But I like letting people hear my car), so I'm in it for myself. I currently don't care for over 800hp, but humans acclimate to speed too well.. So in the far future, I'm sure I'll go up. With that being said, I don't want more than 800 for a daily. So by the time I go over 800hp, I'll have another car. Don't care to drag, I'm a backroads kinda guy. That worry-free life is exactly what I want.. So I think you helped me in this regard. |

If you got somewhere you can enjoy the potential of the Z, go for it, otherwise stick with what you got.

Two different worlds, this is comeing from a current 1LE owner and my thoughts.
While the 1LE can handle some boost and make some good power, 600rwhp is the high end on the stock block before you are going to be pushing daily driven reliability. The 1LE puts down 400-425 rwhp stock, most bolt on mods can get you to 425-480 rwhp. Get into heads/cams and 550rwhp is in range. Add forced induction on top of that and 650rwhp is in range but then you need to worry about hard parts in the engine and maybe even the drivetrain. The ZL1 though, already has 650hp which they are putting down 550rwhp easily. Do the normal bolt on mods (CAI, ported IM/TB, E85, upper supercharger pulley, catless headers and tune) and 700rwhp comes in range fast. Motor is already built for the power and drivetrain is ready for it as well. The 1LE has the ZL1 diff, but not the ZL1 stub axles. I think the transmission is the same in both of them and the clutch is the same so no worries there other than the clutch. The ZL1 A10 auto though is stout and can more than handle the power increase. So it really depends on how reliable you want to be, if this is your only DD then I would be after 100% reliable, but if you are like me and have another vehicle to drive that allows some more flexibility in case something happens. |

I have a 1LE...
If you can afford a ZL1, GET IT If you cannot afford a ZL1, keep the 1LE Problem solved.

Do not trade the 1LE. You'll get your teeth kicked in on the trade. Identify what you would take as a rock bottom price and put it up for sale. Keeps driving it though, so if nobody meets your price, you still have one helluva kick ass car. If somebody meets your price, sell and go get your ZL1. Until then, enjoy your 1LE.

Affordability is not a factor when it comes to purchase. My worries of affordability would be in modding after warranty in case things go south.. Alright I've got some brainstorming to do. |
