Not that big of a difference. Premium fuel is merely "recommended," too, but are you running 87 in your SS?

Yup...best I could. went over the 4k & 80mph a couple times but was pretty easy & went by quick like. I certainly didn't red line / wot it till after the 1500 as recommended.

I've heard both sides of the coin & just slept better doing what GM asked me to do...it went by fast & actually enjoyed the break in. Those who want to poke fun for me wasting my time doing it per gm spec can gloat about the wasted time / perceived misguided advice or whatever it is their self break in knowledge is all they want. This whole self thought process of superior break in knowledge / lack of needing to follow break in is misguided & not helpful to new buyers who should take note of GM's suggestions.

I did what gm recommended and if anyone wants to to project any sort of insulting wasted time/ action of following the mfg's suggestion of how to drive for the first 1500 miles of a car they don't own, or have any vested interest in...well, you are just a troll attempting to force your self perceived knowledge where it could actually harm someone & you have no stroke to back up up your bs. To say an Lt4 could not blow at wot before 1500 & suggest doing so is arrogant & brazen without any actual names and contact from GM to note that warrantee will be covered. Don't do that unless unless you know the brass who will cover your ass.

Again, Not likely an engine will blow with wot before 1500, but it is still arrogant to tell new buyers to disregard anything in a GM break in procedure in writing...I can promise you anyone telling you to do so will not pony up for your claim when you blow the motor WOT leaving the dealer.

This topic is stupid as these engines are made to to take it, but crap happens & to offer ignoring the advice of the OEM break in is gonna hurt a person's wallet some day...will be rare, but why go out of the way to see it happen??

If you bought your car off the dealer lot, you can be sure someone has wound it up somewhere along the line. Test drives, etc. I'm not going to worry about it.

Well said. FWIW, I have worked with every Small Block Engine Chief Engineer since 1993. I can assure you each of them has forgotten more about engine design and durability than anyone on this board ever knew. They are the ones who define the break-in procedures. That's good enough for me.

If you don't plan on keeping it long there's nothing to worry about.

I plan on keeping mine, as an everyday driver, for at least 7 or 8 years. I can't afford to buy a new Camaro SS every 3 years lol. So no, no new car is going to burn oil at 6500 miles. 165,000? If the engine hasn't been broken in and taken care of, absolutely.

I consider it a thing of pride to have well over 100k on a car and everything still be in top working order. My previous car was at 126k when I sold it and the previous one had 225k when I sold it, and all of them I bought brand new.

I waited, and it sucked, it was like "clock watching " at work but I'm happy now that I waited. Coincident or not, every time I drain my oil seperator, there is next to nothing in there so I feel I did the right thing. Either way, at least god forbid something shit the bed with the motor, I can at least tell myself it wasn't because I didn't break her in properly.

I get this strange feeling as well considering almost every other vehicle on the lot has a 10ish something kms/mile on them.

I hammerd on it the first time I drove it and never looked back. I have always deove anything I have ever bought like that though. weather it was a car or a 4 wheeler what ever. I was told if you don't seed in the rings like your going to actually drive it, and when you do drive it true you can have all kinds of problems. I have never had an engine problem on a car I have owned. yet anyway im surte im due for one at some point in my life but I am only 37

I hit triple digits on the test drive, but didn't know about the break-in. Tried to baby it till 1500 and mostly I did. I bought in January, so roads were slick anyway.

Break in for me was the test drive lol... no mercy for this car, and it runs like a champ. Went to the track within a week of owning it, and plenty of fun on the street. It went 11s bone stock, getting great MPG, no oil consumption. Just made sure to do the 1st oil change around 3,500 miles, and I keep up on regular oil changes, and it will be alright. Break it in how you're going to drive it!
