I just watched the comparison and thought it was pretty good. Obviously, the ZL1 won easily in the 1/2 mile straight line test, 152 mph vs 143 mph. The track they used didn't have too many straights where the ZL1 could use it's power to it's advantage. The straight at the end is where the ZL1 won the race, crossing the line at 142mph vs 135 for the GT350R. It's possible that Randy could have driven the ZL1 better, as he probably has more seat time with the GT350R, and is a pro driver not a robot. However, it appears that the R might just be a little better at handling.

In a magazine test, it's better to go off MSRP since it's hard to measure the true price when some paid $40k+ over and some got the R for MSRP. If you actually want to buy one of these cars though, it becomes a huge factor, in my opinion. You can get the ZL1 at a discount fairly easily, but getting the R within $5k of MSRP will be a huge undertaking. For a lot of people, it's not worth the hassle.

I have no idea why you're soo on Ford's jock. I mean, if you're riding them then fine man, just admit it. But dude, Mustangs right now are garbage. Chevy is killing them in performance. The GT can't keep up with the SS at anything other than sales and lower price. And that is because Ford is going with the quantity over quality approach. The GT350 can barely beat the SS in a straight line and hasn't bested the SS-1LE's track time yet. It gets toasted by the ZL1. The GT350R lost to the ZL1. The ZL1 1LE is about to drop and Ford still can't even beat the standard ZL1. It is the end of May and Ford still hasn't even announced the numbers for the 18 GT...probably because it's gonna have the same 435/400 it already has and won't be any faster despite the hype. And there is still no official word on the GT500. And yet, despite the fact that they're losing everywhere in performance, you're still here jocking them. Come on man. I mean to each his own but don't sit here acting like the Mustang is doing something special when they just keep losing.

Well said and I agree. When/if the GT500 debuts.. it may overtake the ZL1 in the straight line. Ford does have that coming in their favor. GM is all about a balance of everything starting with the SS.. straight-line, road course, etc. Opposite of Dodge, who goes extreme either in a straight-line beast (Demon, Hellcat) or track (Viper). |

Come on guys.... Lets be car enthusiasts first..... Heck... Why do a lot of us love our Camaro's? Is it really because it is faster 0-60, 1/4 mile, and around a track or is it more because the Camaro is special to us? Would you guys all of a sudden be buying Mustangs if the roles be reversed?
My 2SS is special to me based on looks, how it drove, interior, etc. The Camaro spoke to me while the Mustang GT didn't. The intangibles is all that is needed to sway us into one car or another despite what the objective stats say. It doesn't matter to a lot of car guys that car A is faster than car B if car B ends up putting a bigger smile on that persons face. Car B is what that person will buy. To me the GT350R is a special car, the ZL1 is not. As I said in my earlier post, it doesn't detract from the ZL1 at all. The ZL1 is a damn good car, it just doesn't scream special to me. It won't be on auction blocks 20-30 years down the road with collectors screaming and paying ridiculous money to put it in their collection. The GT350R will be though( same with the 5th gen Z/28). |

The GT is a tune and CAI away from matching the SS in straight line performance. Ford has relied heavily on the aftermarket to fill in the gaps….something every mustang owner fully understands. We purchase our vehicles not because they are the fastest, but because we prefer the styling, the ergonomics, the visibility etc. If I wanted to be the fastest on the block, I would still have several of my old fox bodies. Also, correct me if I’m wrong…but the SS 1LE has never been tested against a GT350 or a GT350R. Some of you seem to think that simply because some of these times posted are close that they are equal in performance. Different track and weather conditions can easily add or shed 3 seconds to a lap time. The funny thing is here, more people prefer the mustang and it’s inferior performance over the camaro….and nearly always have. You seem to think that performance is everything, and for most people that simply isn’t true. You do also realize that the GT350R just was within spitting distance to a chassis you all claim is light years superior to the S550….and did so despite an absolutely enormous disparity in horsepower and torque. One thing I can say for certain. Many of you can’t stand that the GT350R is considered a “special” vehicle by all media and collectors…so much so that it’s still being chosen when pit against Chevy’s upper echelon. And Ford still hasn’t gotten to the real competition of the ZL1 yet…The GT500! |

Its all based on the demand. If the demand was there for the ZL1 the Chevy dealers would be looking for MSRP+, but it isn't so there are discounts. The 350R is considered a special vehicle and still has a very strong demand, until this demand drops the price will remain inflated. Best short term bang for the buck is certainly the ZL1.

I’ve said it before, given the choice…I would chose a ZL1 over a GT any day of the week…and a GT350R over anything Chevy currently offers. People just don’t look at it the same way they do any other domestic car. |

I wasn't expecting it to be that close either, but.......I'm saving myself for the Zl1 1LE anyways. Either way, was surprised. I though the Zl1 would of laid the wood to the R. Oh well. It's good for car business and us auto guys.

You get banned from the Mustang site for having a different opinion. They can't handle the truth
