"KENNEWICK, Wash. - A car show planned for the Benton County Fairgrounds in Kennewick for Sunday has been canceled because of police concerns about rap music and possible gang activity." I don't mind discussing a point or two, but c'mon, the gang link is in the first sentence of the article. Work with me here, people. I didn't conjure up the link to gangs. And I seriously doubt that criminal elements in the area schedule club meetings for the convenience of the populace. They congregate where they please, and a common interst in a rap star may provide that common ground to meet and have a little gang activity That's not to say it MUST happen. But surely you can see the point

Just because one event was not canceled, that does not provide the proof that all should have been. If local law feels there's a reason to be worried about violence, don't you think they have some sort of responsibility to try and deter it? The show was canceled. Somehow the world kept spinning. I know, I know, what a shocker!

This was from 98' this almost closed down a favorate thing, Due to RIOTS & GANGS
But Hot august nights is going full force & didnt shut down. Big deal may be riots, heck you take your life in your own hands when going in to down town seattle at night anymore. Street Violence Erupts During Nevada Festival Published: August 10, 1998 RENO, Aug. 9— Police in riot gear used tear gas and dogs to subdue melees that erupted during the 11th annual Hot August Nights celebration here. About 175,000 people were in Reno for the celebration, a five-day festival of classic automobiles and 1950's music. The disturbance erupted around 10:30 P.M. on Saturday, after the sanctioned events, officials said. People threw bottles at the police and overturned cars late Saturday and early today. Police Chief Jerry Hoover said that more than 2,000 gang members from around the West, many from central and northern California, had come to town for the event. He said that 210 people were arrested, 130 of them after the disturbance began, and that many of them were 18- to 21-year-old gang members. The police said that some of those arrested were wearing bulletproof vests and carrying firearms. Mayor Jeff Griffin said that fewer than 20 people were treated for minor injuries. Two cars in the downtown area were overturned, he said, but otherwise property damage was minimal. The trouble began when a few cars overheated in bumper-to-bumper traffic, the police said. People began congregating in the streets, and about 1,000 people took over the intersection of Second and Sierra Streets, many of them jumping on cars. When the police tried to clear the intersection, people began throwing rocks and bottles. ''We weren't looking for a fight,'' Mr. Hoover said. ''We were looking to disperse the crowd. That's what we did.'' As many as 150 officers from the University of Nevada at Reno, the Nevada Highway Patrol and the Washoe County Sheriff's Office were called in. During the height of the violence, railroad traffic was halted so emergency vehicles could park on the tracks. Ed Halterman of Sunland, Calif., was in the crowd. ''There were about 100 cops marching down the street with face guards down and riot gear,'' he said. ''They had horses and canines. The dogs were really barking.'' Spence Tidwell of Panorama City, Calif., said the scene reminded him of spring break. ''The police got on it right away,'' he said. |

Just because something is possible doesnt mean it is going to happen, and we cant all live our lives fearing the small possiblities of something going wrong because then we would all do nothing! And im not sure where you are from, but trust me Washington is a long way from being the next South Central. Yeah there are some "gangs" but really nothing serious...and deffinatly no people stupid enough to do something dangerous/illegal in front of hundreds of people in the middle of the day. (Atleast no more then is possible at any other place) |
