Stock tires loud ?
I just took over a used 17' SS ten days ago. Car has had no accidents, 10,600 miles and basically in new condition including the stock goodyears. Tire pressure is set to the recommended 35lbs. The tire noise is really loud especially between 40km/hr to 60km/hr. Almost sounds like a wheel bearing howl but I really don't think thats likely given the age and mileage of the car. Definitely coming from the rear. At higher speeds its mostly what sounds like 'loud tires'. I'm only driving on newer paved roads. Car drives flawlessly otherwise. I didn't notice this during my very brief test drive in the car which I was more focused on the transmission for the shudder issue.
Are these tires that loud ? I still have some CPO warranty on the car but I don't want to waste anybody's time taking it in if what I'm hearing is normal for this car.

Those run flats are loud. When the time came I switched to Michelin’s and it’s a noticeably quieter.

Ok I'm kinda glad to hear that nothing wrong with the car. Surprised GM would put such a loud tire on it. I guess it had to a be run flats which are mostly all loud. This is the first gen6 I've driven so I had nothing to compare too.

Yep, those stock Goodyear runflats are very-very noisy. I've switched to Michelin PS4S non-runflats, and the difference in terms of noise (+wet traction and hydroplaning resistance) is night and day.

Run-flats are very noisy, nature of the beast.

Same tires I switched to with the 285/305 setup. Like arpad_m mentioned the Michelin’s are night and day different.

I take it you also switched wheels ? 285/305 won't fit on the stock wheel will they ?

I have a v6 with the rs package. My car spends 90% of it's time on the highway. Of all the motor vehicles I've owned this car has by far the most road noise in cab.
Your tire selection is going to be a factor as you have been told. I have changed to non runflat tires, I still have to "speak up" quite a bit to have a conversation. If you change your tires dont expect it to be "luxury car" quiet. Sound deadner applied to doors, trunk, ect may be something to consider. |

However, with the PS4S cabin noise is at least in the "normal, though on the louder side" category, while the runflats push it well over into "sounds like a construction zone, no chatting unless you're willing to shout" territory. Also, more sidewall helps a bit with clunk type noises from road unevenness, which we have an abundance of here in NJ. Stock wheels will easily accommodate 255/40/20 front and 285/35/20 rear tires, maybe even one size higher, but front strut clearance and tire width start to become a bottleneck at that point.

My car still has the original tires (I've only got 12k miles on it). I've never noticed the tires being noticeably loud. It's subjective though and you'll likely get a bunch of different opinions on this. I wonder if slight differences in alignment have an impact on this?
I don't recall this being mentioned in any of the magazine road test reviews, but that doesn't mean the tires aren't noisier than others.
