Bringing this back to life. After 2 years still on the fence about Lag (turbo/throttle). I am still 3 years away from a tune and have posted this topic in several different threads. I have a Vitesse throttle controller that did nothing for lag.
I can't be the only one experiencing this, running in traffic' and for some reason traffic slows abruptly. The best and safest course of action is to slow down with traffic, but I am in a sports car and want to jump over a lane and get on down the road. But the lag prevents this from happening, mostly because I don't know if the car will respond in time for my maneuver. Now if I have enough warning I can blip the throttle and engage "performance shifting" and it becomes a non issue, the car performs with confidence. Race Chip claims their throttle controller will eliminate the throttle lag. From another post: Quote:
![]() Anyone have a clue how much of the lag is throttle vs turbo. At 4k on my car I just can't bring myself to get a tune. If tuning is my only option I will drop this subject. |

Just put it in manual mode and downshift.
Throttle controllers only reduce the amount of actual pedal input needed to achieve a certain throttle blade position. Turbo lag is normal because remember the turbo is powered by the exhaust housing. Also, I think you may be expecting too much. If you plant your foot to the carpet, the car (in auto) it might take a half a second to drop the gears. If you want more than that, save some money and get a 100k porsche with a dual clutch gearbox. Everyone "experiences" lag but I think you are creating an unnecessary problem for yourself. Don't keep wasting your money on throttle controllers. The solution is free, put it into manual mode if you really can't stand the half second delay of the base model automatic single clutch 8-speed transmission. I wouldn't drive yourself crazy. It is a FI car, any turbo will have some lag. I will say though, if the car is at 3-4k rpm and you're getting no power or torque almost immediately upon stepping on it, there is something wrong with the car.

The "lag" that the XLR removes is the "lag" that most throttle controllers will remove. That is, you pushing the throttle down 50% and the computer taking its time to open the throttle body that far. It really makes the car more fun to drive. The Race+ mode is ludicrous.
Turbo lag is caused by a lack of boost. It takes time to build boost. For me, it's pretty simple. I drive a stick, so in situations like you have, I can downshift and keep my RPM around 3k. Boost is high and I have the power I need right away. At some point, I may try the only thing I can think of (that exists and is cost effective) to reduce lag: downpipe upgrade (probably along with a CAI). By the way, if you want a "tune" but dont want to void your warranty, the RaceChip GTS is pretty damn cool. |

I've read your posts here, and in other spots. This is a common problem everyone talks about, and everyone has their own theory for a cure or fix. Most people are getting it very wrong though. Your specific problem (from your descriptions) have nothing to do with the turbo, lag, throttle lag, drive by wire ect ect... No "throttle controller" is going to fix it. Your problem is actually inside the transmission tune. YES, that's right, the transmission. I will show you. These areas I have circled in red, are what I call throttle "dead zones". As you can see, basically the first 30% of pedal travel for both up and down shifts are dead. There is 0 difference between pushing the pedal down 1% or near 30%. The transmission will react and shift at identical speeds. From 30-50% pedal, there is very little change. Again contributing to a "lag" feel. When you adjust those tables, 90% of what you experience is corrected. Biggest changes happen with the down shift mph and pedal %. You can tell it to down shift at 10% pedal if you wanted ect.ect. So when you hit the gas to pass, no more waiting for that down shift. If you really dial it in correctly, you won't even need to downshift anyway because you will always been in the right gear for your MPH anyway. (except maybe 7th and 8th ofc) So yeah, long post, but to correct your issue, you need to tune your trans, or find someone who can.

This information was specific to man0steel's 8l45 A8. The m6 configuration does not use a TCM, but..... I would not be surprised, knowing GM, if the m6 suffers from a similar fate, just in a different way.

No turbo lag here with the M6. Straight hauling ass on a dime.

No worries...you just sparked an interest in me. I've learned quite a bit since I bought my Camaro 26 days ago...a fascinating world.
