The Camaro team probably didn't like it because they didn't come up with the design and it looks better too.

My first 2 cars were Chevelles.
I was initially attracted to Chevelles because, aesthetically speaking, they were bigger, meaner, and more aggressive than the Camaros. Also used Chevelle's (and parts) were cheaper and readily available in my area. The 1st and 2nd gen Camaros were rather rare and I had absolutely no interest in the 3rd and 4th gen Camaros. Fast forward 20 years and I was just about to pull the trigger on a 6th gen Camaro (I had been dreaming about it for a while) when I suddenly veered left and bought a Challenger. I really don't care for Dodge but the Challenger is such an unabashed American hauler that I couldn't resist it's unrefined charm. It helps that the Challenger has a large trunk and useful back seat (although not as bountiful as a Chevelle, you could actually procreate in the back of a Chevelle). |

But I come from higher-hp cars, in the past, and eventually the little 4-banger wasn't enough. One test drive with the LT1 sealed the deal.. Fuel mileage isn't a high priority for me, at this point. |

Cars I have owned, in order age 15 to 32 (63 this month): 65 EL Camino (15), 66 Malibu coupe (16), 72 Malibu 350 2v (17), 72 Chevelle SS 350 4v (19), 75 RS Camaro (21), 79 Z28 (1st new car, 23), 64 Malibu SS vert (30), 70 Chevelle SS396 4 sp ( 30 sold in summer of 87 to buy 79 vette, worse car move I ever made although I still have the vette and like it), 84 Monte Carlo SS ( 28, "my family car" when my daughter was born. This reminded me so much of a Chevelle in so many ways except just a H.O. 305. GM stopped the model to go FWD and build more pickups- big mistake). Wanted the vette, who knew the Chevelle would be a $60K car today, Fathom Blue, white stripes, white interior, buckets, console, 4 sp, factory air, and gauges. Don't know what I was thinking. So it goes, a Chevelle today with a big block and all required safety features would make the modern Challenger look like a lightweight and would cannibalize Camaro sales to the 40 - 65 age group that remembers them and buys Camaros. Wish I had the 70 back!

I just traded in my SRT 392. HATED the handling. I wasn’t expecting earth shattering results considering the weight. The room was nice but I don’t miss it one bit. The Camaro handles like a German sports car. I was floored with how responsive the Alpha platform has made this car. I have no regrets of lost space, hauling the family around works and they even like it better. Granted, we won’t take this on long trips. But if the wife and I get out, it’s a no brainer on what ride we are taking. |

Couldn't they just have used the CTS Coupe configuration of the Alpha Chassis and restyle the body as Chevelle, Impalla, or Nova throwback and throw a Chevy badge on the front?
Either way, more room, with a V8, and rear wheel drive (not to mention German like handling) would be very tempting, assuming it looked right. |

The difference here is that you can't get the CTS with an LT1. You can get the LT4 CTS-V, but how about a more Charger competitor. LT1 rear wheel drive, and you can use the back seat. Use Chevy as the stripped down affordable car, and Cadillac as the luxury brand. Makes no sense to have Cadillac feature "exclusive" engines. Have Cadillac feature more luxury and high end features. They turned the ATS sized Alpha into the Camaro, make the CTS sized Alpha the Chevelle. I'm not asking for four other versions. |
