Run Flats
Hey guys, I'm new here and appreciating all of this valuable information! After 25 years without a Camaro I am back - guess I just never forgot the car.
I am loving my new 1lt, but the only thing I question is those run-flat tires on the RS. They seem like more of a hassle then they are worth. I'm used to just putting on a spare if a tire has an issue, not driving on a flat tire and having to get it fixed within 50 miles. I am wondering what other people's experiences and opinions are - thank you in advance! |

Personally, I hate runflats. Every car I've had with runflats have blown sidewalls out on potholes. I just blew out the side of a Bridgestone DriveGuard on my BMW last week, and one of the Bridgestone Potenza RE050's on my SS Sedan a little over a month ago. At one point a couple years ago I blew threw 4 Michelins on my CTS-V Coupe, so this issue isn't limited to Bridgestone.
Also, if you have a small puncture like a nail hole, the 50 mile clock starts from the second the tire is underinflated. Heat is what kills runflats, and most shops will require you to replace the tire if it shows heat damage on the sidewall. If you're under your new car warranty, or if your insurance provides towing as part of their road side assistance, get the car towed as soon as you notice there is an issue. That can save you a few hundred dollars. I know a lot of people complain about run flat ride quality, but I've never found that to be an issue. https://imgur.com/gallery/K5rKN That's how my sidewall looked last week on the BMW!

The run-flats are crappy. They are good in the snow because they are A/S tires but outside that, they're not cutting it. The ride is just fine but they grip just as good as a greased up fat guy trying to pick up a wet watermelon.
It depends though... I was expecting a "performance" run-flat... no, no,no... But if this car is just a way to get you to and from work, stick with them. There's no point in getting better performing tires if you don't plan on racing or any spirited driving. I have not had an issue with my runflats thus far, but I do plan on replacing with a summer performance tire real soon.

Took my run flats off at 300 miles, replaced them with a wheel and tire package from www.pkautodesign.com went with 20x10 all four corners with 285/30 Bridgestone Potenzas Pole Position. Bought a pump and slime stuff in a kit for truck tires that sits in the trunk just in case.

The run-flats on my 2LT RS came in handy once for a blow-out I had. The bad thing was that they're expensive. At the cheapest, those tires are $250 without installation.

Run flats are HEAVY tires. They have their advantages/dis-advantages,... But..ALWAYS heavy.. Rotational mass at the furthest point outward matters!

Well thats pretty unanimous and also kind of what I thought. I'm old school in that I like a spare with a jack - I prefer a full size spare, but can live with a donut. I dont like the idea of being on a 50 mile clock. I like to get it fixed where and when I choose, somtimes more than within 50 miles. $350 a tire dosent excite me too much either.
Chicago Tommy thank you for that information on heat. I am in NY so that should only be a 6 months of the year issue. This is my daily driver so I think that I will keep them until they wear out or I have an issue as you suggestted Wiskeyfed. I have another question - can these tires be plugged. Over the years I have driven over my share of nails. Usually its a $20 repair for the remaining life of the tire. For some reason I thought that I heard one nail hole and these become garbage. Is that right? Guys, thank you so much for this info. I am really enjoying being back in a Camaro after 25 years and I am really enjoying this forum! |

When i went from my stock run-flats to my Indy 500s the handling difference was definately noticeable.

Thanks again guys, I have no experience with them, but just wasn't sold on the concept from the beginning. Unfortunately, I had no choice if I wanted the RS package. I will just replace whenever the time comes.
I am kinda wondering now if instead of the RS package, I should have gotten an aftermarket wheel (always loved Cragar) and my own spoiler. Oh well, too late now. I do love my Camaro and that is all that matters. |
