Tramlining and Tire Choice
I've got a '17 SS and would like to put the widest stickiest summer tire on the back BUT I don't want to introduce any tramlining.
If I keep the front tires the stock width would I avoid tramlining? Also, what rear summer tire would you recommend? |

Tramlining is heavily dependent on the tread design, too, not just the width. I'm running 275s in the front and 315s in the rear, with zero tramlining. The 1LE and the ZL1 runs 285 in the front, and the ZL1 1LE has 305 wide meatpackers, now those probably tramline much more (I've never driven a ZL1 1LE, hope someone who does can chime in to confirm or refute).
That said, if you're thinking to only go wider in the rear, make sure you try to keep height changes to a minimum, because ABS and Stabilitrak will misinterpret wheel speeds and malfunction if you change the front-to-rear circumference ratio by more than ~3%. In addition, you'll need to relocate the main body harness with tires wider than 305, see this thread for instructions. You can, for example, safely go to 325/30/20 in the rear, but 325/35/20 will cause a ton of issues.

Oh, if you want to keep your OEM wheels, the answer is simple: 255/40/20 in the front, 285/35/20 in the rear is the most you should do. This setup will work just fine with zero issues (I know because I ran it for a while), you'll have absolutely no tramlining with a quality street tire, say, the Michelin PS4S or the Continental ECS 02.

I went from SS sized tires to ZL1 sizes both same model Continental tires with no noticeable difference in tramlining.
