Excluded features: available later?

With the chip shortage, some features are currently not in new cars (backup cameras, etc).

Will it be possible to add these features back into a new purchase later, once the chip shortage is over?

Here's some stuff from the corvette forum which sounds optimistic:
https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...rvettes-6.html

I would make sure that any feature you want in the car is supported by the trim level you are ordering. And I would specifically get it in writing from the dealer that they will retrofit your vehicle at no cost once parts become available.

Man, I would be hard pressed to be comfortable ordering a car with features that should be there, that are not... and then getting installed later. I don't think I could do that.

Me too, went to look at a CT5 and it had some key missing features like heated wheel "that can be add later", hard pass

Backup camera (via license plate) is legally required in the states. Doubt they would sell a car without it.

Rear view camera (via mirror) is a feature with 2ss trims (and Zl1) and can be added later. Some vendors sell them online for nearly $2k. I would imagine the dealer would have the same ability as a third party vendor.

But yeah, I would much rather buy a complete car than assembled later… partially because my service at dealerships hasn’t been consistent.

I agree with everyone above!
OP asked if it COULD be done. Answer seems to be, "yes."
But I shiver at the thought of asking a dealer to do something they may never have done before.

Hey Dabjbr,

If you're referring to what's covered in thread https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=600557, do remember that it's different from any rear-view camera. What is being (temporarily) removed, and made available as a free retrofit later, is the park assist sensors in the bumper.

And yes, it does suck that some cars will show up with a few less features, but hey it is what it is, unless you're willing to wait longer for a car

I think some people's aversion to things that can be added later is a bit...unreasonable. Specifically, the heated steering wheel jumped out at me. You know they just replace the whole wheel with a brand new one right? If you're averse to something like this, you probably shouldn't bother having the mechanics work on your car at all

Most people have a legitimate fear of having the knuckle draggers at a dealership touching their car even for a simple oil change much less anything else.

"Most people", "legitimate", "knuckle draggers"

I think you're generalizing without proof. I have multiple personal friends who are dealership mechanics, who take a significant amount of pride in their work. They love doing what they do. While my experience is anecdotal, if you, personally, have been affected by "knuckle draggers" at a dealership - I'm sorry. Sounds like tough luck.

I wasn't aware of the backup sensors delay. Thanks for sharing the link.

That said, I was only making my points because the OP mentioned "backup cameras" specifically.

The last thing I'll add is that many manufacturers have port-installed or dealer-installed options. So, I wouldn't say having a dealer install something is absolutely bad, just less ideal. For something basic, I probably wouldn't delay my build.

It is what it is applies to so much right now! Indeed Geoff

I don't have an issue with the dealer installing something, I'd have more of an issue that I paid for a car with certain features that it doesn't come with and you are getting no guarantee when those options will get installed. I have no issue with my dealer working on any of my vehicles. They've been doing it for the better part of 25-30 years. Never had an issue.

If LethalGarage can do it, anyone can.
