No surprise that my Focus isn't worth as much as I'd hoped so cost to change puts my total budget closer to $30k plus tax/registration. I've also learnt more about tax credit on trading in which seems to negate most of the benefit of selling my Focus privately so I'm probably going to hold out for a few months and look for a manual 1SS (ideally with NPP) towards the end of the year (hoping any discount offered on leftover 2017 models either puts them within reach or causes a knock-on drop in 2016 cars)

That's cool! You should always buy what you want and what feels right. I was going to say make sure it's an RS at all costs, I didn't realize that's standard on the V8. The headlights are awesome.
