Yep. When I first swapped on my winter wheels and tire set back in January, I used an old block I had laying around that was "roughly" the right dimension. It was lengthwise on the grain and split almost immediately, but worked well enough to get the tires and wheels swapped the first time (the lands at the top supporting the weight).
Must be cross grain.
