Some automatics didn't even have a 3-element torque converter, and were slow as molasses off the line as a result. Wouldn't even let you spin the tires on a launch on a wet road - crossing a rain-soaked crosswalk paint stripe was your best chance. The aftermarket performance automatic industry was in its infancy.

I haven't been 30 something for a long time but the expiration date on me is still good for now. My two speed powerglide wasn't exactly race ready from the factory. I wasn't fond of the whirring noise it made either. Reminded me of my mom mixing stuff in the kitchen with a blender. That being said I won't be stuck in Slowvakia on the Amazing Race cuz I do drive a stick.
