Although many still persist in the myth the Corvair was discontinued because of safety it was not. It is Ironic because it was driven out of the market by the Ford Mustang, that was cheaper to produce and had better performance. Which turned out to be more dangerous than the Corvair was.
And if you remember I think it was NBC that rigged the tanks to explode in their "tests".
Pintos were the same way and had no bulkhead either between the trunk and passenger compartment.
Many GM cars of the same era had their gas tanks in the same location but they were under the trunk floor therefore not as much a safety hazard.

Yes we also came to find that the old VW Beatle was far worse than the Corvair due to the light front end continuing to go straight when you turn the wheels. Funny how Nader did not pick on VW. I saw a VW flip and roll right in front of me because of this. Years ago he was tail gateing me so he decides I am not going fast enough so he steps in it and whips around me. Problem is when he whipped in front and cut right the front end kept sliding straight he lost control and it flipped. It made me let out a big laugh.

Went up and turned around to see him standing next to he overturned car in the ditch.
