I would use track wrap (thick plastic film with temporary adhesive) instead. You don't want a cover that shifts around in the wind and collects dust, marring the paint, as Chutzpah said.
Sure, you can compound and polish the paint afterwards, but why would you want to waste some of the thin clearcoat for no good reason.
