I'm still hopeful for synthetic fuels to save us, but it's highly unlikely.
To be fair, the oil companies, tire companies and car manufacturers did this to us. They wanted the interstate highways, they wanted our reliance on fossil fuels. They bought up and destroyed electric trolleys/streetcars that connected much of the continental US in the 20th century.
They stifled research into any alternatives. And look where we are now.
