A lot of people (myself included) complain about how cars aren't built the way they used to be. My father had a 67 Cadillac that literally made it unscathed against a hail storm that generated softball sized hail. Those hail stones ripped through the rest of our cars and made them look like very fat woman thighs. Of course, today's cars are made the way they're made for "safety standards". I mean I'm sure the auto industry likes that they're not having to invest in so much steel, but the crumple zones are actually created to absorb a lot of the energy in the event of an accident. The safety beams surrounding the interior are meant to withstand the impact. So while the crumple zones hopefully do what they are meant to do, the rest of the car with the occupants will stay relatively intact. I'm personally waiting for "securefoam" like on Demolition Man, but I can see it now, people purposefully getting into accidents in an attempt to activate the foam.
