rad hose collapse

I am assuming this is normal, however, I have never noticed it before. I was detailing my engine bay and noticed my upper rad hose was fully collapsed. Any Idea why? Car is running fine, I am just curious.

they usually have a spring inside of it maybe it got damaged or worn over time id just remove it and replace it

samco makes some nicer ones if you want to upgrade up to you!

This is a sign of low coolant level how is the level in the coolant tank

That seems unusual. The radiator cap will let the system pressurize but I don't think it should allow a vacuum to form. Under vacuum the system should draw fluid from the reservoir which isn’t sealed. You might want to have the cap checked.

Yes. Most likely the radiator cap is the culprit. Because, that ain’t normal!

Is this on your Camaro? Either way its not normal. You have an issue with coolant pressure. Possibly a stuck thermostat, low coolant because of a leak, radiator cap, I don't want to go down the headgasket road yet. Get it checked out. Hopefully its something simple. Let us know .

Well, who woulda thunk... Bottom reservoir was completely empty and the top was only half full. I have been driving new vehicles for 15 years and have never had to actually check coolant levels. Didn't even dawn on me. On the bright side now my reservoir is two different colors. The only open station near me didn't have the pink dexro stuff. Only the yellow 50/50 Pennzoil.

I guess I will have to monitor this a little closer. I had my oil changed a few weeks ago, I was told all the fluids were good. Mind you, that is if they actually checked it. Knock on wood I don't have any leaks. She hasn't been running hot.

You are very fortunate and lucky your Camaro didn’t have major problems or a complete meltdown before you found the low coolant issue!

I assume too much. I know that. But why didn't I get a low level message? I mean, it bloody well lets me know when my shoe lace still has the clutch engaged 1/16 of an inch for longer than 3 seconds but it wont let me know of my critical's?

Yellow Beast 04-14-2020 09:55 PM

It won't let you know your coolant level is low. If the coolant is really low it will overheat and the temperature guage will go up. Coolant doesn't evaporate. If your reservoir is low, you have an issue. A leak somewhere or an overheating issue. Maybe its just a hole in the reservoir which I doubt but its possible.

99.9% of the time only the lower hose has a spring in it to keep it from collapsing because it is the intake. The upper hose is always under pressure. More than likely, your hose did that because of the thermodynamic change when you got everything wet. (From the pic, it looks like it is wet and I'm guessing you washed the engine and/or radiator).

Once it warms back up (engine temp, not outdoor temp) it should fill back out.

FYI the manual's wording suggests that low coolant is an expected condition from normal use ("when it is low" not "if") that should be checked for (pages 271-276). There are plenty of people who have posted in this thread that found low coolant without any other adverse symptoms from their car. I actually checked my own car after reading that thread last year and found that I needed to add some coolant to both the top and bottom tanks. Or maybe the factory is not filling the coolant to the correct levels on some cars.

I have had to add about 2 quarts of coolant in my 10k miles of ownership to the lower reservoir. I drive during the cold months of the year too, so my usage may be a bit unusual.

Sound to me like you added non-Dex-cool coolant with factory fill dex-cool.
Not a recommended thing to do. Google it and you'll read all kinds of reasons why not a good idea.
