Is the Mustang going back to pushrod?

Allegedly...

Finally we can lay the "BuT The MUStanG oNLY HAS FiVe LETeRs hurr durr" trend to bed

Seems like a stretch, given their Ecoboost and downsizing trend.

But at the same time, they are slowly canning the Coyote on F150 and pushing hard on the Ecoboost 3.6, so it's possible that they are using another V8 so they have a V8 Mustang option.

What is the benefit of a pushrod motor vs. an overhead cam motor? Seems like a step backwards (although I'm not that well versed on this so I might be way off)...

Low end torque, weight, size, center of gravity, simplicity (and all their associated ancillary advantages) come to mind.

The only real disadvantage is that they can't rev very high because of the extra mechanical coupling (pushrods), everything else is negative hype.

Power per litre also tends to be higher from the factory with DOHC engines, which is good for countries with displacement tax. In North America, it's a moot argument.

But yeah, pushrod engines still exist for a reason. Here is an Engineering Explained video for a quick summary:

I hope ford does it and forces gm to put the LT3 into production for the camaro.

DOHC engines are expensive to make and top-heavy.

The timing chain kit gets very big and complex and the heads are huge with nearly 2x the moving parts.

Baby steps, let's start of with LT2.

That’s a good video... how do nascar engines rev so high? I think 9k if I remember

Well I doubt the LT2 would make the power of a ford 6.8?
Anyways, the Camaro is running out time- no more pulling punches.

To be devil's advocate for a second, GM themself has made and is making DOHC V8s. Remember the Northstar? Supposedly a pretty solid engine with the correct head bolts. Now we have the Blackwing 4.2TT which looks pretty awesome as well.

When you don't have to have the engine last hundreds of thousands of miles, be daily-friendly, and the budget isn't an issue, anything is possible.

MakCamaro 10-31-2020 06:12 AM

Lubrication is also another challenge with DOHC engines.

BlaqWhole 10-31-2020 04:13 PM

Coyote engines are garbage anyway. They're tapped out as far as power and reliability. Ford would have to up the displacement again and even then they'll be sacrificing reliability. Look at the Doodoo engine. That thing was swamped with issues at 526 HP. Meanwhile both GM and Dodge at 6.2 and 6.4 respectively are easily in the upper 400 HP range without any of those issues. And they could still go higher in HP or increase displacement. I doubt Ford can push past 480 HP on a non-special edition non-limited production Mustang and get away with it. They'll be blowing up left and right worse than the GT350s did.
