Cover for Intake Behind the Grille
 

I’ve seen this get questioned a lot - about the intake tract cover just behind the grille. There are a few pictures floating around of the cover; since I had my fascia off this weekend, I figured to snap some details:

First two pictures need to be rotated 90 clockwise (phone pictures).

I took it off recently when I had my front bumper off. I have no idea if there was any tangible benefit from doing so but, eventually I'm going to address that area.

So cut the black plastic panel out?

You can remove the plastic push pins and remove the element or hack it up. I actually removed it and cut out a bit of an area so high pressure air from the grille area could flow right it. I elected to not remove it to keep the elements out (kept the cover functionality for weather).

I too would be interested in modifying this area...
are you saying there is some kind of baffle inside there that can be removed or modified..

I would love to see exactly what going on in there before i take it apart

Revised the pictures with some killer paint skillz. Added reference marks (red [cover] star and blue [intake] star/lines) and also added a reference picture of a car without it's whole fascia.

Has this been proven to get more air in? My car is going in for a cam install and while it is apart I can have them pull that off if it is beneficial.

It is something that has been loosely mentioned through various threads on Camaro6, but more recently and much more discussed in this thread: https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showt...=543003&page=9

Take a look at the intake routing of a lot of late model HP cars out there next time you go to a car show (i.e. where air is picked up from initially and the rest of the tract). You will see this sort of thing. Probably to most relateable in design to the 6G Camaro, but done more properly is with Mustang. The idea is to take the cool, high pressure air and allow it to be pushed into the intake tract ("ram-air"). This is the true "cold air" way.

Problem is, where Chevy placed the inlet, even if you remove the cover, it's not the best.

Yeah, there's really no advantageous way to address this. But I think we can come up with something.

For my Mustang, they sell the Velossa big mouth, which is just an extension from the airbox through the grill. People use it for lower AIT.

I don't see why some sort of solution like this couldn't be made for the Camaro.

What would be the benefits also? I never really followed this type of thing, I honestly thought people put on the Mustang to look different.

Instead of removing I would drill holes in it to allow airflow but still keep debri out. Also didn't Vararam say that removing the bottom of the stock airbox was good for about 15hp alone?
