Stock catch can/breather
 

I have seen a few threads about the nipples on these things breaking off, etc. Is there any reason why you would not consider replacing the stock catch can with one of the aftermarket ones?

There isn't a stock catch can.

Is there an air/oil separator? I have not heard that our cars have one. There is just a short tube that goes from the crank case to the intake as far as I know anyway. This is why some people add a catch can.

its junk in that regard. it will still let a lot of oil and who knows what else into the air intake. i broke one of the fittings off mine and ordered an aftermarket catch can to replace it. take a look for yourself on your car. remove the tb and check it out. even 100% stock, mine had oil dripping off of it.

Very true. Replace that TB line with a breather cap and plug the hole in the air intake elbow. Breather caps where used on valve covers before the EPA and emission standards made manufactures go this route. Not good for engine longevity to put the dirty side blowby in the TB.

The LT1 engine has a “clean-side” separator connected to the valve covers that drains back into the block. It is referred to as the “clean-side” because it feeds fresh air from the air intake tube (behind the MAF) to the valve covers. If you replace part or all of this system with an aftermarket air filter you can change the air/fuel ratio because you’re allowing the engine to draw unmetered air (not measured by the MAF) into the intake manifold.

There is a separate PCV hose running from the block to the intake manifold. The PCV hose is the on “dirty-side” and draws the contaminated fumes (oil, fuel, and moisture) from the engine into the intake manifold. This is where you would install an aftermarket catch can if you want one.

Your thread scared me. I just checked to make sure my nipples aren't leaking oil and i seem to be okay for now.
I don't even want to see what's happening to the car though.

Blowby isn't as big of an issue on n/a cars but any performance engine should have one. The deposits coat your intake valves

Blackheart, if you have warranty left on your Camaro I wouldn’t put a catchcan on the engine as the warranty will be void if you do.��
