External Tachometer Signal Pick up

Has anyone had any luck with installing an external Auto meter Tach? I am having trouble finding the right wires to cut into to pick up signal, I have a 2018 SS LT 1 -6M . Been in contact with Auto Meter, but not much help. Got the pin connector diagrams from GM, that come out of the ECM, but things are confusing! Anybody done this one before?? Got the Tach Adapter that I must run through.

There are a few post similar to your question and I don’t recall any follow up with results. There are posts with successful shift light installs which could provide some insight.

Thanks Trochoidal, I have some homework to do on this. The signal must be digital, and very hard to trace. Looking at this thread, Dakota Electronics picks up the signal from the diagnostic port. Sounds easy, but I also want to plug a Ethanol gauge into that port. got to make sure I can do both. I would have though this a common install, but its tricky.
Wonder why Auto Meter does not make it this easy???

Tach on the SS runs off the camshaft position sensor signal.

there are details about the tach signal in this TSB (PIC6299A) about an erratic tachometer
