I want to go to CUBA

I was sitting here with the tv on, the news had an article on Cuba, I wasn't paying attention to it at first, I glanced at the tv and couldn't believe my eyes, they are all driving vintage cars, some foreign, some sh$% boxes but I picked up on a '56 chevy wagon, didn't catch if it was a nomad or not, there was an early '50's chevy coupe and so many others. Now I don't know for sure if they were showing very old footage for some reason but if not that place is a gold mine. It was national news because Obama was talking about something to do with what was on. I'm going to watch it closely next time it comes on.

RubyCamaro 12-17-2014 04:36 PM

Yeah, they have had restrictions on things for so long they have become very good at keeping the old cars going!

AZCamaroFan 12-17-2014 04:37 PM

lol they havn't been able to get cars from the U.S.A in over 50 years.

and i'm pretty sure they don't want russian cars.

CFD 12-17-2014 04:40 PM

Regardless of why I am wanting to go there and bring them all back where they belong.

You would be sadly disappointed in the old cars in Cuba. Most have been converted to Russian Diesel engines and are in horrible shape! I thought as you do, but when I went a couple of years ago over Christmas, I was sad to see the shape these things were in.

I wouldn't be looking to restore, I'd be more interested in building them, if the body was half decent I'd be thrilled. The few I caught on the tube looked like there was plenty to work with but looks can be deceptive.
Even so, there is a butt load of them, I'm sure I could come up with some good candidates for some cool builds.

Cars in Cuba

I was in Cuba in 2012 and there are plenty of cars in good condition. Needless to say a ton of them are past their prime, but none the less you will find some gems.

You should see the cars they have. most of them you can not recognize anymore as it is a mix of multiple cars. Engine from one car, transmission from another. Sometimes even the chassis and body panels get mixed and matched together.

You think you sit in a Ford, everyone looking at it from the outside thinks its a Chevy, and if you open the hood you realize its a Dodge

rebelyell22 12-20-2014 03:01 PM

It's not hard to get there. Just go through Canada or Mexico

You didn't know about that?

Don't be fooled into thinking Cuba is a car restorer's paradise. They like their old cars, sure, but they'd like to have new Hondas, too. They "make do" with their vintage cars and are ingenious doing so, but the car restoration hobby knew about this for many years and frankly, you'll be disappointed when you see the average old car from Cuba, up close. Their economy doesn't allow the average Joe to be driving an old, original car you'd enter into a show.

I knew about it from years ago but figured by now they'd all be tin cans. As I mentioned I'm not much into restorations as I am hot rods, from what I saw there is plenty to work with

The prices on classic cars and trucks is about to fall through the floor. An entire nation that hasn't seen a new ride since the Cuban Missle Crisis. Either that or "Cuban classic" is about to be the most expensive class of classic car ever known.

:) Subscribe to Hemmings Motor News instead and save time and money on a trip to look at the old iron and the cost of shipping it back to your home. Don't forget- Cuba is an island in the ocean. Sure the place is warm. That doesn't mean the salt air hasn't supported corrosion or that these cars haven't taken a few spins on the beach.

I have doubts about that. As the saying goes- the junkyard is full of classics too. This might be a source of parts, but frankly not many people will want to spend $ on refurbing an original, but damaged or incomplete part when the same money could get a reproduction piece that was not originally made by a drunk auto worker. Quality controls, metallurgy, work standards, and overall quality was not what nostalgia makes it.

I'm sure plenty of good cars will be available, but not in great enough numbers or in a short enough time span to affect the existing old car market. Just my two cents as somebody that was in that hobby for over 20 years and has been aware of these Cuban cars for just about as long.

Plenty for sale if you go to Europe. Great cuisine can be had, too.
