Another A8 Shudder Question

I have a 2017 2SS with a little over 34,000 miles. I developed the trans shudder recently so I took the car to the dealership on Monday. Tuesday they called and said I need a new transmission. They didn't do the flush at all. They simply stated it was bad and submitted a claim for a new. I'm out of warranty but I have an extended warranty I bought with the car.

Is it weird that they went straight to replacement? I guess it saves me the trouble of stepping through possible solutions and them not working.

Any one else have this experience?

Thank you!

Never heard of that - usually worst case with the shudder is that you have to replace the torque convertor. Did you show them the service bulletin?

Your extended warranty has just paid for itself several times over. Once the job is done, enjoy your free, brand new 8L90. Do make sure the torque converter is new as well , and I'd also double-check the fluid the service dept will use (AFAIK the correct part number is still 19417577).

Yes, I took them a hard copy of the TSB.

arpad_m, I was thinking the same thing.

I'm curious. Would you be willing to share the name of the dealership, or at least what city it's in?

See if you can get a printout of the service ticket. Anything they submit to the warranty underwriter will have to have some kind of detailed analysis. They don't just pay for a new transmission without seeing the justification.

The warranty company sent an inspector to the dealership (Simpson Chevrolet of Garden Grove, CA) last Wednesday (12/14/2022). The warranty company notified the dealership today that they want the injectors replaced first to see if the trans issue goes away. My GM service tech said he told them that the issues are unrelated but the warranty company said they can't approve the trans until the injectors are done.

I told my GM service tech that I guess we need to replace the injectors. The warranty company is paying for the injectors as well so whatever they want I suppose.

I was just informed by the dealership that they ordered 8 new injectors.

I'll keep this post updated and thanks for the part number!

Had the A8 shudder few years back, did the TC flush multiple times, car was still under warranty. Luckily my service advisor was a family friend and was aware of the issue, I wasnt recommended the TC replacement or transmission.

I haven't received any updates from the dealership but I did just receive an email from OnStar stating that they detected an issue with the Engine or Transmission. My guess would be that they are replacing the injectors and I'll hear from them later today. I'll keep this thread updated.

I do not understand dealerships and how they make decisions. Likely, the trans is perfectly fine and just needs a flush and then the new updated fluid.

Honestly, I wouldn't want them to change the entire trans without first trying the flush (and updated TCM software). Sometimes when major components are changed in a vehicle, the vehicle is sometimes never quite right again. I just don't trust dealership monkeys.

And the warranty company insisting on new fuel injectors, WTF. Yeah, lets just piss away more money for no reason at all.

The shudder is a known, documented issue with known solutions.

Likely won't matter to you since you are getting a new trans but the 2017's also have a TSB to update the transmission software for a know glitch and to fix a hard 1-2 shift on the first shift after starting and driving.

Spaceme1117 - I totally understand what you're saying. I don't like anybody touching my car, especially dealerships. I had to convince myself that it'll be fine. Everyday that she's at the dealership, is a day that I'm uncomfortable, on the inside.

FYI, no update from the dealership today so if they are working on her they haven't mentioned it to me. I image that they wouldn't update me until the injectors are done but that shouldn't take more than 1 day, if that.

Thanks!

TBH I don't think "dealership monkeys" would be trusted with a full trans replacement job, either the dealership has (or calls in) a transmission specialist or at least they give it to a senior tech. This isn't a typical lube job thrown to the new hire at the bottom of the totem pole.

Simpson Chevrolet is a fairly large dealership here in SoCal. But honestly any decent ASE certified mechanic should be able to swap a transmission. The tech isn't being asked to rebuild it or anything. Simply, swap bad part for good part.

Obviously, there are a few items to note along the way:
Make sure the Torque Converter is fully seated (slowly rotate the TC while applying light pressure until it "clicks" 3 times and it should be full of fluid
Use the correct torque value to tighten the bell housing bolts with the correct cross pattern using at least 2 passes to get to the absolute torque value (if using the same bolts, I always clean the threads and use blue Loctite).
Reconnect the drive shaft
Plug in the electrical connector(s)
Then make sure the TCM is communicating with the new trans, BCU, and has the correct software version
There may be a few GM specific steps I didn't list here but they’re in the manual and hopefully the tech can read.

I'm a DBA by profession. But back when I was a starving musician I pulled and reinstalled several transmissions (4 or 5). Automatic transmissions suck because they are freaking heavy, but you do what you must when you don't have money and you're young. I have faith enough that the dealership can get this done correctly and if not, I know where they work, LOL.

I got my Christmas gift early, I think. The dealership called me on Friday (12/23/2022) and said my car was ready. I was shocked. The Tech stated that they changed all 8 injectors (the injectors apparently were clogged and leaking) and the shudder was gone. He said they drove around and no sign of shudder at all. When I picked her up, I found that they really did drive it quite a bit as she was totally out of gas. I took it in with a 1/4 tank, but whatever. I'm not worried out a little fuel.

They charged the WC $727 for 8 injectors ($90.97 each). I found them for less online. But I didn't have to pay for them. I'm just noting for the record. $410 for labor for a grand total of $1201.84. She drove great with no sign of the shudder I had experienced previously. I was still confused how the shudder was fixed by replacing the injectors.

I was ready to deliver this astounding new shudder solution to the Forum, right up until I read the work order and saw that they had flushed the transmission without mentioning it to me. I'm not sure if that was an oversight or what but the Tech blamed the shudder on the injectors. I am not convinced now that I know they flushed the trans. And there is really no way of knowing if the flush or the injector swap corrected the issue.

For my interests, I'm happy it's fixed. I hope it lasts and I'm going to think positively until proven otherwise. For the rest of the Forum, I am unable and unwilling to say the injectors did the trick. My gut tells me the flush is what corrected the shudder and the new injectors returned her to maximum performance. She did run great again which is the best gift of all this Christmas.

Thank all those who participated in this thread. If anything changes I'll update the thread but hopefully there won't be a need.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!
