Heat Shields
Hey all,
I've started to notice a rattling noise coming from the heat shields on my Camaro. They are bolted on tightly still, it's the end part that isn't bolted on that is loose. I first started noticing it around December when it started to get cold outside. Has anyone had this problem before and found a solution? |

Nope. But on other cars I've just bent them so they aren't so close and can't touch whatever they are hitting.

I had a similar issue near the driveshaft. I put some washers with some rubber pieces (old bike tube) and it helped a lot with the rattling

Thanks for all the input. I'm going to try and bend them first and then go from there. Anyone that's taken them off...have you noticed the floorboards or anything else getting hotter from taking them off?

I live in Las Vegas and previously Dallas. I haven't noticed any difference.

I would first try some sort of insulator like a piece of rubber or something else with good heat resistance that you can wedge between the shield and body. Otherwise you can try and bend it a bit like mentioned above.

What kind of mods do you have? Perhaps something is hitting the heat shield that wasn't there from the factory? If so you may need to dimple or tie off something to fix the issue.

I have long tube headers with muffler delete axle back exhausts. It didn't look like anything was touching the shields and nothing felt loose, either. I went ahead and took the heat shields on both sides of the car off and I'm still hearing the noise, so it's not the shields causing it like I thought. At this point I'm not sure what it could be...any suggestions?

I didn't think about checking the sway bars. I hear the rattling noise when I accelerate and stay around 1500 RPMs or when I let off the gas. The handling on the car seems fine and it doesn't seem to get worse when I turn the steering wheel. I would think if it was the stabilizer bar link or the bushings I would notice a difference when I turn the wheel. If I stay parked and hit the gas up to around 1500 RPMs I hear it too.

Our issues sound really similar I also get the noise at a certain rpm range and true I would also think that there would be some tell tale handling symptoms..... but so far other than the noise everything appears to be normal.....handles great and the ride is pretty smooth... no weird tire wear either.
I haven't tried the sitting still rev part though...…

IF its still there, do the same on to the drive belt and start it up and reproduce the sound. If it disappears, change the effected belt. If there is still a noise, I would think its drive train possibly or torque converter? |
