Test Drove 1LE: Odd Engine Management Issue at High RPM?

Hi Everyone,

I tried looking in the forum for another post like this but could not find one.

I test drove a brand new 1LE yesterday and loved the car. Recently sold my 2014 1LE and was looking to replace it with a new one. Everything about the car felt better then my 2014 except one thing. When I was accelerating to run it through the gears just to get a feel for the power, I noticed when the car reached about 5500 rpm that it seemed that the electronics were retarding the ignition and was losing power instead of accelerating right up to red line. I noticed this every time I attempted it. The car was in track mode, the weather was about 68 degrees and the tires were not slipping.

Is this normal? Did I have it in the wrong mode? My plan is to track this car on a regular basis so I need to know if I was doing something wrong or if there is a potential problem with this car. I test drove a 50th anniversary SS a few months back and didn't notice this behavior. My 2014 had no issues pulling straight to redline.

Thanks for any information.

Doesn't sound normal. It's possible that it has a bad tank of gas.

We had just put a half a tank of premium in before I ran it. Car had 9 miles on it so the only gas in the tank before we put some in was from the factory.

I guess it's possible the gas we put in was bad but it seems like a long shot.

Thanks for the response though.

Why I only order cars...test drives before the break in period are complete. Only 9 miles on it and pulling runs to 5500-6000 rpm's when Chevy recommends no more than 4000 rpm's until 1500 miles. I might just be a pansy but I stress about this kind of stuff before I buy.

I can promise you it wont hurt a thing, the engines are ran to red line when they are built and the cars are while leaving final production.

I know for certain that's not the case in the engine plant.

I don't think that's the case in at the assembly plant.

I hear you and I baby my cars as well. But I'm buying a performance car and I want to make sure that the $45K I'm putting down puts a smile on my face for many years to come. Let's just say that there is a problem with this car, I prefer to find out before I put any money on versus plucking down 45K and then 1500 miles later only find out the engine won't rev past 5500. And then what happens from there. It's in service for weeks and the mechanics are fooling over it trying to figure it out. No thanks.

A single hard run won't hurt the engine. In this case I made a couple of attempts but they all failed.

this is very "odd" indeed I don't think this is a common issue or else we would hear about it already. It has the same engine with the SS and C7 Corvette as you mentioned since it's just a package to the SS which makes me think this might be unique to that car. Bad spark plugs and/or bad gas maybe?

Granted it has been years since I worked in a plant, but cars were ran on a WOT run on some rollers in a QC area in the plant I worked at.

Awesome!

They still do the rollers, and there's a series of functionality checks that lasts about 5 minutes. Total miles on these cars coming out of the plant is about ~3...I don't know if WOT is still part of the process...

Personally as long as the 500 mile oil change is still recommended I wouldn't do a WOT to red line in one during break in.

1500 miles? Where do they mention that?

My car has 700 miles on it, and I did an oil change to Mobil 0w-40 at 650 miles.

Yesterday I went to a NASA track event and ran it pretty hard during three 20 minute sessions. The car performed flawlessly, all temps were perfectly in check, and tires came right up to pressure just like the supplemental performance manual said they would. It was over 90 degrees ambient and the oil temp never got above 265, water never went over 200. My friends with dedicated race cars had oil temps approaching 290 and water at 240.

Don't be afraid to run these cars hard. They have been almost over-built and are extremely capable. I had so much fun yesterday and the car impressed they hell out of not only me, but my instructor as well.

That said, Id probably do what I did and change the oil after 500 or 1000 miles before doing a track day, just so you can flush out anything the OEM oil would have picked up in that time.
