Anyone here daily drive their Camaro year round in the midwest?
Hello everyone,
In a few weeks I will be driving at least 400 miles a week in Chicago to and from work plus what else comes up. Does anyone here drive there car in a similar fashion and more importantly do you do it in the winter(Snow and ice)? If so how do you prep the Camaro for winter duty? I am thinking definitely snow tires, stock steel wheels smaller than the 20's that are on the car & weigh down the truck for traction. Currently my car is garaged in the winter, and I drive my truck. At this point in my life I really want to downsize and continue to reduce my expenses, between the wife and I we have 4 cars, so I would like to go down to 1 car for each of us. Obviously the Camaro would do a lot better on gas than the Tahoe, but having to deal with winter in Chicago is a bit concerning. Thanks for any responses. |

Yes
Snow tires and a few bags of sand. Got stuck once in 4 years.

I live in Chicago and mine is my DD. As long as you pay attention you should be fine. I have never changed to winters tires or put weight in my trunk. Only time I have any issue is when it snows greater that 7 inches, at that point you need to stick to the main streets.

Just a note on snow tires, never had a set prior to the ones for my 2010. Really awesome.
They pop up on here all the time and also on http://www.chicago5thgen.com/forumdisplay.php?f=13

I drove mine the first winter. Did VERY well. If I can make it in Minnesota, you can make it in Chicago.
I have a set of 19" wheels and tires that are still in great shape I'd sell you if you are in the market.

I live in chicago , drive both local and highway year round. Like the others have said snow tires are awesome. The only time i've had problems is when clearance is an issue. I just run a 17 inch set of wheels and tires dedicated for the winter

I thought about it, researched it, and in the end I bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee for $4k and it has treated me great.
Cheap to purchase (relatively), cheap to insure, cheap to register, and I still have a vehicle that I can use to make dump and Home Depot runs

I have the staggered 20's for rims, honestly tires make all the difference. I use Pereli tires year round and as long as you know your car and know how to drive it you should have no issues. I drive US 41 in the winter in Indiana, I've only ever had 1 issue with slipping or getting remotely stuck. I've also driven in snow storms I probably should not have and I just had to slow down some. Watch your speed, if you want to keep weight in the rear end I would help with traction. I personally don't have anything other than a tackle box and fishing pole back there.

Rain sleet snow & sun. Everyday all year 'round it's great!
Snow tires make it a half track! I get lots of looks in the winter from 4X4 drivers. |

I drive mine all year and the 18" BFG Radial T/As seem to do well enough with about 120 pounds of sand in the trunk. No slipping issues.
