Parents know that coaching a teenager on how to learn safe driving skills is vital. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, in the United States, the fatal crash rate per mile driven for 16- to 19-year-olds is nearly three times the rate for drivers ages 20 and over.

The all-new 2016 Chevrolet Malibu will debut Teen Driver, a system that provides parents with a tool to help encourage safe driving habits for their kids, even when they are not in the car with them. Teen Driver supports safe driving habits by muting the audio of the radio or any device paired with the vehicle when front seat occupants aren’t wearing their safety belts, and it gives audible and visual warnings when the vehicle is traveling faster than preset speeds.

This feature is the first in the industry with a built-in system that lets parents view on a display how their teenager drove the vehicle. Maximum speed reached, distance driven and number of times active safety features were engaged all can be confirmed.

“We developed this system so parents could use it as a teaching tool with their kids – they can discuss and reinforce safe driving habits,” said General Motors safety engineer MaryAnn Beebe. “As a mother of two, I know anything that has the potential of keeping one’s family safer is of great value to parents.”
Malibu can keep track of the following:
  • Distance driven
  • Maximum speed traveled
  • Over-speed warnings issued
  • Stability control events
  • Antilock brake events
  • Forward Collision Alerts, if equipped
  • Forward Collision Braking events, if equipped
To use Teen Driver, a parent needs to enable the feature by creating a PIN in the Settings menu of their available MyLink system, which then allows them to register their teen’s key fob. The system’s settings are turned on only to registered key fobs.

When active, Teen Driver automatically mutes the radio until front safety belts are fastened. Additionally, the radio system’s maximum volume can also be set to a lower level. If the vehicle is equipped with active safety features like Forward Collision Alert, they are automatically turned On. Parents can select a maximum speed (between 40-75 mph), which, if exceeded, activates a visual warning and audible chime.

If equipped, these are the safety features that are automatically turned On and incapable of being manually turned off when Teen Driver is activated:
  • Stability Control
  • Front and Rear Park Assist
  • Side Blind Zone Alert
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Daytime Running Lamps / Automatic Light Control
  • Forward Collision Braking
  • Traction Control
  • Front Pedestrian Braking
“The first step with this technology is to make sure that all drivers and passengers within the car are safe,” said Steve Majoros, Chevrolet car marketing director. “In addition to innovative safety technologies like this, you will see efficiency, advanced connectivity and stunning design in the 2016 Malibu.”

Teen Driver is not a subscription-based service, so it remains with the vehicle permanently and will be standard on the Premier trim and optional on LT models if equipped with the Convenience Package and up-level radio. The 2016 Malibu debuts at the New York Auto Show in early April and is expected to go on sale at the end of 2015.

I'm glad this crap wasn't around when I started driving.

Too many helicopter parents these days as is.

Teen Driving Mode in my house - you aint driving my car. Drive your mommas vehicle. Stay out of my car.

On another note, I wish the valet mode limited the HP or did something other than lock up the radio. Because my biggest concern when I leave my keys with the valet is that he will change the station I am listening to....

Lol why do they think they need this crap? Whats next? Will they say.......Driverless cars are safest, so therefore, my teen will ever need to take a single risk, or make any mistske, because they will never know to joys of driving. Driving is for losers. Ask any teen out there today to choose between their phone, or a license, the answers are surprising, or they at least heavily considered before answering. Choose between and electronic leash, or freedom,...... strange days.

Yep - I think this is sooooo strange. My nephew was not in any rush to get his license. I think its partly because they have so much freedom with their phones now AND many are spoiled overall. When I was a teen (early 90's), if the 'yellow dog' didnt pick me up and bring me home, I didnt go. I only got to see friends at school or on the bus (we lived in the country) so I couldnt get my license quick enough. Now they are a smart phone away from their friends. And my sister shuttles my nephew everywhere all the time like a personal chauffeur. Why get a job to get a license and pay for insurance if mom is waiting on you hand and foot when it comes to going somewhere?

Driving as a passion is going away with the younger generation. It will be dead in 25 years. People will look at us like we are Will Smith in I-Robot driving in 'manual' mode.

Teen Driver Mode is just a limited electronic tattle tail you can attach to a specific key fob or just turn on in general. If used in conjunction with Valet Mode you can see if the person who parked the car was having a bit of fun on the way to the parking spot.

You can also set a few other parameters with the mode turned on. Seat belts have to be clipped-in to turn on the radio, the overspeed warning is a MPH set by you, and you can limit the car to 85mph, which should keep your kid out of jail for being 20 over on the highway when they are pulled over for speeding.

I was nineteen back in early 1970. My Dad bought himself a year end leftover, 69 Corvette Coupe. 350/350 HP, 4 speed, etc. I was allowed to use it occasionally. Eventually it was mine.

Good Lord....I would have been SUNK with this stuff.

They should rename it "Asshole Parent Mode"....lol....It's hard enough to teach your kids to be independent, responsible and trustworthy ....This Teen-Mode only makes it worse.

Yes as mentioned the passion of driving is def wearing off. Half of the people in my my age range (25-32) could care less about a car or hp. Half don't even understand why I am obsessed with speed and cars and mods lol. They literally say it's just a car and half of them don't know a Mustang from a challenger from a genesis coupe lol.

Freakin sad man (smh). As a teen in the early 2k's I always had fun cars and couldn't begin driving soon enough. Now though the it's about smart phones, uber, and most "in" cars are bmw 320i's, civic's, and such. Even the sti's, evo's, etc (fun cars) are dying off and more people are into luxury and convienance rather than fun.

My favourite thing about this thread is the parents agreeing that sheltering your kids every second of the day is wrong...

Its quite refreshing to hear!

When i was growing up the teen parent mode was simple - if you can afford to buy it you can afford to drive it.
