I was at Home Depot, heading to my car and a guy in a van stopped and asked, "Hey bro, you need a home theater system? I've got two of them. I see you've got a really nice car there and figured you'd be someone that would want a high-end system." He mentioned that about my car again a minute later.

He went on to explain that he was on his way to install a system and the guy at the loading dock accidentally put two extras in his truck. I looked, and he actually had five identical systems in his van, still in the sealed boxes. He then opened one of the boxes and showed me that he wasn't just trying to sell me a box of bricks. Then he showed me an ad in a magazine for the same ones to prove that they retail for $3,800.00 each; he only wanted $400.00, and was flexible on that. He could tell I was skeptical because he kept saying that they were totally "NOT stolen, man!". I said, "well, somebody paid for these."
"No, they're already paid for, see?" He showed me the invoice, which meant nothing, because it was hand-written (even if it was typed, it could still be bogus).
"If they're paid for, won't someone notice they're gone?"
"No, the guy at the loading dock messed up and threw them on my truck. If I don't get rid of them, my foreman will just throw them in his car and keep them for himself anyway."
"So if I call your boss and give him your name, he'll be cool with this?"
"Look, do you want the system or not?"
"No, I think I'll pass."
"Fine then, get out of her you f---in' pu--y!"
And he left in a huff!

He originally told me where the job was that he was heading to, but I saw him down the road in traffic and he went the opposite direction. Even though I could have bought it and it would never have lead back to me, I'm not going to support criminal activity. Besides, I already have a home theater system.

Its not stolen. Its not high end equipment either. They have been running this scam in Houston for years.

HOLY CRAP! That's exactly what this guy did - he even drove a white van! He had a company uniform with an ID badge. I don't remember the brand of the speakers, but it was one I didn't recognize.

Thanks for tipping me off to this - I've never heard of this scam. I'll have to let me Facebook friends know about it.

And I guess there's some karmic justice to my not wanting to buy stolen goods - I'd be just as bad as the thief, but I would have been the one getting ripped off.

I have actually purposely gone to these guys selling just so I can get more info about them. Its just shitty merchandise they sell for more money. It's very common here in Canada as well.

After posting a warning in Facebook, I'm surprised how rampant this is. One guy said he gets approached 5 or 6 times a month by these scammers.

Yup, went down just like that at a Jack in the Box here in North Ft. Worth. Kept commenting on my car.

I told him i sunk every penny I had into it and had no other money to spend after I bought my ramen, as I had an egg roll in my hand. Plus a relatively large bag as I had a few people over.

I'm a guy with a clean-cut look that could pass for a cop, so next time I'll make it obvious that I'm checking his plate number and ask his name, then look him straight in the eye, pause for a moment, and very seriously ask, "Greg, have you ever seen the inside of a jail cell?" And keep staring, just to see if his paranoia gets the best of him.

That, or I'll ask a second time for his name and the company he (supposedly) works for, then take a long look at his plate and say, "let me go to my car and make a phone call first. Just wait right here." Chances are, he won't!
