GPS map database update
Has anyone received any information about updating the database in the GPS in MyLink radios? I have a '13 and the database is at least 2 years old. I spoke to somebody at GM last spring and they said that it is usually updated in the Fall, but was not in '13 because of a change in suppliers for the database. I was told that the update would cost about $200 and be on a flash drive that the car owner could use to update it themselves without needing to get a dealer involved. I sure would like to get an update as I have been misled several times due to the database being so outdated.

That's why it's better to have a Garmin($150), which comes with lifetime traffic and map updates.

Not to mention the difference between Garmin and Mylink nav is like the difference between major league baseball and minor league baseball. Garmin is the Rolls Royce of nav systems.

I used to use my nav on my previous car all the time until it became terribly obvious it just wasn't up to date even with updates. That's why I just opted not to get navigation on camaro and just use Google maps on my phone. Free, accurate, and has traffic updates.

GPS map database update
I did a trip and used a paper map, a Garmin and Google maps on I-phone as a test comparison. Google maps was the winner with paper as 2nd place ( as long as you have a second person to read it). The Garmin (with updated maps) was frequently wrong.

I agree that a Garmin would be a lot better, but I would like to use the built-in GPS as it is more convenient and I wouldn't have the clutter of a separate unit on the dash. I have a Garmin that I used in my Miata and now use in my wife's van or my pickup, depending on which I am driving. The wife has even gotten used to using it as it was "too confusing" for her before. The MyLink GPS would be fine if they only updated the database. It has never gotten me lost like the Garmin did quite a few times ("Arriving at destination on left" when there were no buildings in sight or trying to go to a WalMart and ending up in an Industrial Park. However, those happened a few years ago and the database is much more accurate now.).

If you have OnStar they can send directions to your car. I would rather do that than have to keep updating MyLink

It's easy to install, just ask for the CD and remove the face plate using 2 screws under the head unit and it should pop off and then just pop the cd in that is located behind the screen.

Be careful with the free Garmin "Lifetime" map updates. They define "Lifetime" as the lifetime of the product. So once they no longer support that model you're SOL any way. Just a tidbit of information.

Last that I heard, the update was slated for 4th quarter 2014. So any time now.

I have tested my Garmin vs. my Android Phone (Google Maps) in several locations across the country.
Averaging them all out the Garmin had more correct or closer than Google Maps. However in some locations Google Maps did a better job. I think it has to do with where you are which one will do a better job. I have had occasions where I couldn't get cell reception, Google Maps didn't work very well in those cases. Sure I could have downloaded the area prior to going there, but I didn't know I was not going to get any cell signal before hand. So far I have not had either one get me hopelessly lost. If it was not right on it was close enough for me to find the location or figure it out. I use my Garmin more due to the fact that I don't have an unlimited data plan and I don't have a mount for my phone. I also don't always have a charger for my phone and navigation drains the battery fairly quickly on my phone. I never liked the high cost of typically around $200 to update factory navigation units. Garmin and Google Maps are free updates. |

i got confused, did he ask about garmin updates, prices, glue on your dash or the updates for the nav system from gm?
so where do you get the update when it comes out? |
