MPG

I have just over 3000 miles and the readout on my dash readout and the OnStar app on my phone stays the same. Do the math after filling and am getting a higher mpg than the car is calculating. Anyone else having this issue? Car stays on 18.1, my calcs range from 19.5 to 20.5??

Tip: Don't depend on what the DIC says for your cars fuel economy. It is NOT reliable. Manually calculating MPGs every time you fill up is.

Do you reset the DIC each time you fill up?

DIC is not 100% accurate. Its pretty close if you reset it everytime you fill up. I always reset MPG, Ave. MPH and trip meter everytime I fill up and its pretty close but not exact.

My DIC has been spot on (within a few 10ths) every time when I compare to a manual calculation, but I reset everything every fill up. I've got almost 10,000 miles on him.

I created the attached spreadsheet to track my mileage/mpg. It uses formulas to create a running average that you see in the top cells.

All you need to do is make sure you when you visit the gas station, you fill it all the way up, record the mileage on your receipt. (receipt has the gallons/price per gallon info).

Then, just enter the date, miles on odometer at fill up, gallons filled, and price per gallon. The formulas do the math.

The first line has the gallons filled as 19gallons. In order for the spreadsheet to work, you must start from a full tank, and each gas station visit, you fill completely up.

Here's my actual log that I've been keeping, as an example of what it looks like.

That's pretty cool what the poster did above, but if you want something that's a lot easier to use you can just sign up at Fuelly.com and track your miles per gallon that way. All I have to do is send an SMS text message to a # I saved in my contacts with the odometer reading, price per gallon, and how many gallons it took to fill up. Fuelly does the rest of the calculating figuring out what that tank's MPG was, what my running average is, etc. Then it replies with a text message telling you the info (within seconds). It actually is really nice because then I can look up what my odometer reading is (since the last fill up) anywhere with a computer so I can figure out if I'm about due for an oil change or whatever. It actually has been really nice on my 1994 Camaro because I don't drive it as often. To complicate things with my 1994 Camaro, the engine has been swapped so the engine miles are not the true odometer reading and the odometer is from a car that has more miles than the odometer that originally came in my car (I upgraded to a newer dash) so I still end up having a spreadsheet to track what the TRUE body miles and TRUE engine miles on the car are.

Wow.. that's really pretty damn cool!!

I did not know about this!

It's like they took the exact idea I had for my spreadsheet, put it online, and ENHANCED it!

I created that spreadsheet in 2008.. But, I'm going to definitely check out Fuelly!

Thanks!

Haha yeah - should make your job a lot easier. There's also mobile version of their page for entering in on the phone but honestly I find the SMS method pretty easy. I have "C" defined for my 2012 Camaro ("Clifford") and "R" defined for my 1994 Camaro ("Red Alert") so all I have to do is type "C 13685 4.129 12.363" and a few seconds later I get a text message that says "Fuel-up Added! MPG: 24.3, AVG MPG: 23.6, More stats on Fuelly: http://fuel.ly/134870 " (just filled up this morning)

You have no idea.. I literally spent HOURS researching how to do advanced formulas and rolling averages in excel to create this spreadsheet.

Easily I have 12 hours worth of work into it..

I see that fuelly.com does trending stats and provides space to place notes and such... I'm going to try it side by side with my spreadsheet and see how it goes after a couple of tanks. This may actually replace my spreadsheet.

According to the DNS Registrar records, the domain name has been around since 2008.

WOW!!!

I just saw that they have an option to do a CSV import!! I can import the existing data I already have on my spreadsheet, into my new fuelly vehicle profile!
