Aaron Link - Lead Development Engineer - Gen6

Interesting fact, from an article in HotRod magazine:

We asked about any special engineering for the LT1 in the Camaro and Link pointed to the air/oil separator as, “an unsung hero of the car. We developed a legit air/oil separator for the LT1. That was near and dear to my heart. I spent a lot of time on that one.” As all Camaro LT1s will be wet-sump engines, Link told us the air/oil separator is cleverly packaged, so it’s hard to appreciate in the car. Its function is to keep oil out of the airbox and throttle-body—and therefore the combustion chamber—avoiding pre-ignition.

Cool...
A Big DI problem, that has been solved...
This has always been a problem, with the GM 2.0T DI engine

Hopefully this engineering feat, has been applied to the 2.0 T & the 3.6 V6

Hopefully it will work as advertised. I believe the new system is integrated under the valve covers. I also hope that if it doesn't work good enough, that a catch-can can still be installed easily enough. Otherwise, I would suggest Seafoam.

Yup, long time wrench turning buddy of mine suggested a couple tablespoons per tank of gas.

Sea foam is great but with D.I. it will not help the intake system.

'Vettes have had DI for a couple of years now, do they also have the same separator system and, if so, are there reports of oil in the intake indicating a catch can is still necessary?

They do not have the separator system. Not sure if they're having issues or not though.

This was a C7 with 5500 miles on the clock!

Solved? I think GM s first attempt may not be all as claimed. I would still run a catch can.

My third year AFM on my 5.3 was revised but still screwed the rings and burns oil. I do not trust GM engineering tell I see it is working 50,000 miles out.

As noted above, Vettes have issues requiring regular cleaning with BG etc...

Well, catch can it is. Does a catch can handle both sides of the engine, or do people normally run two catch cans?

I read somewhere that Audi is now using direct and port injection to reduce engine emissions, but it helps with this issue as well.

On your car there is a clean side and dirty side.

With DI you want to run top tier fuel, preferably premium, good, fully synthetic oil, and I would run a catch can. On most engines, the passenger side is where you would want it...
