Good COTA lap time?

I have a 2023 SS 1LE A10 with the "copper free brakes" took it for its first track laps with Chin Track days.

Mods:
BMR cradle lock out
SPL toe arms
Front and rear Blackwing brake cooling ducts
SRF fluid
Track alignment
Stock tires

I was very impressed with the brakes on track with the stock pads.

I am a novice driver but managed to turn a 2:37.60 Best lap along with a few 2:38's. This a good time for a SS 1le at COTA? It was fun running down and passing a gen 4 viper ACR every session, along with some 911's and C8's...

I defiantly need to get more camber in the front cause 2.0 killed the outsides of my tires.

In the Road Course/Track and Autocross section the top pinned thread has the Best Track Times posted by forum members (Post #1 has the times broken down by track).

Looks like COTA is high 20's for SS 1LE's like LateBrakeU2 mentioned.
A lot of them have video's posted, I've watched a few for tracks I've driven and plan to drive to learn good lines for our heavier cars. Helps a lot!

FastMatt12, were you in the white 1LE? I was in the Satin Steel 89X 1LE. We talked! I ran a 2.30.53 and I definitely had a few places I could improve considering it was my first time at COTA. Awesome track! Here is my lap:

Hello, yes that was me!

Nice lap! you are defiantly braking way deeper then I am. I'm thinking changing out the coper free pads for something better is going to be a good idea on my car.

Well looks like a have a ways to go lol. I am still a novice track driver for sure. I may be getting too old to learn new tricks but I'm trying.

I have got to get some more camber in the car for sure. I drove the car 1900 miles round trip to the track and was a bit worried about the front tires on the return trip.

Good stuff Matt! I was good talking to you, your brother and friends. How'd your brother do in the big dog ZL1 1LE?

That was my first time at COTA and first time at another track other than my home track, Pitt Race. I have about 12 years experience tracking 3 different Camaros (edit: after this weekend, 4 Camaros!). I'm 50 and I'm still learning. COTA is actually a great place to explore these cars with the long sweeping 16-18 (turning the car with throttle), any of the super tight slow corners and the esses of 3-5. I spent about 10 hours on Forza 7 running COTA in a Spec Miata. This was invaluable for me as I learned the track. I was immediately comfortable on Saturday and I kept getting faster. I'm usually a slow learner but COTA felt so good to me. I want to get back with my own car! Even my best lap is full of opportunities for knocking off time. I have a buddy who works for GM and while he drives a "slower on paper" M6 SS 1LE he is consistently 2 seconds faster than I am. And looking for those two seconds gets us looking at very small areas of differences in the corners. Little adjustments can yield big time. If it was easy everyone would be fast.

For sure deeper braking can help as long as you are staying in the throttle longer and you don't over brake thru the entry and center of the corner. Of all aspects of track driving, I love braking the most. The car I was driving had Ferodo DS 1.11 pads. This is the same compound I run on my BCD equipped '22 SS 1LE A10. I run the typical non copper free ZL1 pad shapes. There are lots of threads on this here on the forums. Just google "copper free brake pads camaro6.com" and you'll find lots info.

With the a track alignment and fresh DOT 4 fluid, these cars are so approachable to drive fast. I tell people as long as you don't do anything foolish, the limit of grip is easily found. Very progressive ramp up to that point.

2:30 is a great lap time for 1st time. The A10s are faster in most cases then the M6. There is also a huge difference in lap times depending on what track limits you used and what speed bumps they have in place, which makes comparing lap times hard to do.

Agree! 2:30 is great for a first time at COTA. You definitely did your homework and showed up ready to attack the track.

@FastMatt, 2:37 not too shabby! It usually takes people a couple trips to COTA to really put it all together and run their best laps. I wanna say my first weekend there I did a 2:38. Now after a few times there, it's consistent 2:28's.

When I look at my videos, there's still a LOT of room for improvement. I just don't get near the seat time I'd like. My setup should have no trouble turning 2:24's. As Chad pointed out, all the little differences in each corner can add up quickly to significantly faster laps.

Scott, I wanted to call you to take you up on your COTA input but I just got busy and kept pushing it off. I should've hit ya up when we first exchanged PMs!

I can see lots of places I can improve on my 2:30. But as I said, the 10+ hours of Forza 7 was invaluable. And being in a familiar car was another big part of the puzzle. Coby Shield of 89X Motorsports gave me some tips that helped me knock another couple seconds. He once had an SS 1LE and still recommends that car for track days.

I think my brothers best time in the ZL1 1LE that visit was a 2:27 but the tires where toast. The car was sliding around allot, and the car was having some other problems too. He is a much better driver then I am, he runs in Red and I'm still in green. I think he has done a 2:25 there in a SS 1LE of 89X's in the past.

It still surprises me what these cars can do on a track in basically stock form.
