Tunes and the CEL
Just curious,
Does a tune just turn off the CEL light OR actually correct the condition causing it. I have a CAI and Catted DP, yet still getting one. I can ignore it, but have read, being on, will damage the engine as it runs it super rich.... compensating. Thanks in advance ! |

When you tune you can adjust your AFR...so it would correct the issue but I also deleted my CEL from the secondary O2 sensor entirely

You will want to read the trouble codes to see why you got the CEL first and then you can decide how to address the cause of the CEL.

P0420
Typically the P0420 code triggers the Check Engine Light if the readings of the two sensors are similar It would be how I knew the issue... |

Yeah, I have an 02 Extender to install this weekend; see if that fixes my issue.
Just suprised, with a catted version of the DP, I'm getting it. Asking questions as worse case scenario - ;( |

Automatics seem to be unpredictable. Some get CEL some don't...

What catted dp you using? Honestly you shouldn't be getting a CEL from the Catted DP.

You're getting a CEL because your aftermarket catalytic converter doesn't work the same as the OEM cat, so the thresholds the ECU is expected to see with the secondary O2 sensor don't match....and the CEL happens. What lambda (air:fuel ratio) the engine operates at has nothing to do with your aftermarket Cat or its associated CEL. To your first question; an ECU tune can turn off that code. Reprogramming those catalyst thresholds to your particular downpipe are going to be waaaay outside most aftermarket tuners skill levels, not to mention the labor to do such a recalibration would likely be outside your likely preferred cost. You driving around with a catalyst threshold code lighting the CEL will not hurt the engine in any way.

High flow cats are not as efficient as a stock cat. Most companies won't take the time to manipulate the 2nd o2 sensor placement/angle to try and get the CEL to not come on, they just get it to fit in the car and send it out the door. If you've changed the down pipe to anything other than stock, odds are good that you will get a CEL at some point...
On my 2010 SS, I would get a CEL for ONE SIDE of the hfc's like once every 2-3 months. The other side never thew a code on me. Doesn't hurt anything to drive around with the light on... Just annoying to look at. |

YW. Seemed odd it threw a CEL I guess it can happen from brand to brand and not all cars act the same. The good thing is on here you'll get a good range of feedback from multiple sources.
