Doesn't look bad at all but I'm guessing with a catch can would look half as bad (or the same at 106k miles)... A Catch Can may not be needed, but anything I can keep off my intake and valves is "gravy" and the engine will be that much happier...

Thanks for posting. More evidence a catch can isn't required.

I don't think it would look any different with or without a can because it looks like the deposits are getting hot enough to burn off. My guess is it will look exactly the same at 100k as it does now.

Also a good excuse to perform the "Italian tune-up" regularly.

I checked them again at 63k miles (10k miles with catch can) and they were much more coked up than they were when I checked them that time. I had also installed more mods but isn’t that weird? Maybe catch cans actually make things worse.

I don't think they make things worse, but maybe you were driving a lot harder than you did before? With the mods maybe that's doing something, not sure how many mods you did. Maybe the catch can installed does not filter well. They are not all equal.

The issue is more likely tune than can, but you never know.

Once you cross over into the mods & tune world, forever will it dominate your destiny.

My valves at around 32k miles. No catch can at this point but I installed one afterwards.

Was doing my research on catch cans and found this topic. From what I understood so far:
1. New car, stock engine, Mobil ESP x3 oil changed regularly -> stock oil separator should be enough.
2. Starting to mod -> install good catch can.

Refreshing to read a couple pages of posts on this subject without it turning into a flame war. Try to suggest a catch can isn't a necessity over on the four cylinder forums will not end well.

Some early DI engines with poor PCV designs AND significant oil consumption (early Equinox DI application a prime example) created such a a black cloud that some actually believe intake valve coking was never an issue before DI came along. Of course that's not true. The right combination of duty cycle, oil consumption, maintenance (or lack thereof), etc. can create carbon build up no upstream fuel delivery system can wash off.

Let me know what you guys think.

The valve guides look cruddy but the valves themselves look ok to me.
