forged 416 build
the timing chain broke and caused a fair bit of damage, that coupled with my aversion to failure, I'm hopefully going to build a motor that I can get more than 25,000miles out of.
failure and diagnosis here http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=382495

the plan
1st tore it down and assessed the damage
Good Parts: block, heads, clutch, rockers, rods, a couple of pistons and the crank could be reused, but it needed some work Bad Parts: chain (duh), cam, some pistons, most of the valves, crank needed some work, oil pump, metal everywhere.......... with the above and the plan to keep road racing on weekends and having the car as a true daily driver we decided on a few necessities and a few good to haves and some things just because forged stroked bottom end with a slight bump in compression custom grind on a 3 bolt cam motion core from BTR designed for torque and sustained high RPM keep the 660 BTR springs (tested good) reuse the comp cam trunions (checked good) LS2 "bow tie" tensioner C5R Katech chain and factory gears another high volume oil pump CNC the intake and exhaust runners on the stock heads polish the combustion chambers for heat control head studs oil pan baffle external oil cooler ATI 10% under drive balancer auxiliary oil temp gauge under hood fuel pressure gauge data logger for smart phone all I have so far is the pan baffle and the heads the pace should pick up after this weekend

be safe this time go with a nice Fluidampr harmonic balancer to help engine vibrations and a nice timing chain would help and also driven racing ls30 oil,,,, that's all the advice I can give, and your old cam did have a lot of wear and metal shavings around it in your pics. Good luck. I do know that a comp cam gear drive has been made also......

sooooooo true, it is sweet looking. I know that I am not an early adopter, but this looks so good and I don't see how I can go wrong with it. this definitely falls into the "just because" category of purchases!

Saw that gear drive at SEMA....very interesting but not sure I would spend that money. C5r chain is well proven.

Give us a call if you need help on the short-block or short-block parts. With over 200 crankshafts in stock, 200 sets of rods & probably 60 sets of pistons I bet we have something to get you going. We can even machine the engine for you. With the TSP short-block setup you get cnc digitizing & blueprinting to make sure your bores, decks & cam to crank correlation is correct. That's something nobody else in the LS industry can offer!!
