11's on Street Rubber

I'm on a quest for 11.7 or better on street rubber. This trip to the strip resulted in 3 high 11 sec runs, 3 12.0xxx sec runs, and the rest low 12 sec runs. My best time was 11.8479, a personal record in this car. See below for time slip data and video links. Sorry, no GoPro video this time. I only got 6 PDR videos out of the 11 passes - too busy disabling nannies after line lock. Only have 8 of 11 passes on spectator video too - my grandson was doing his homework and missed 3 of them. As always, I don't look to see who's in the next lane until I review the videos so I may have mis-identified some cars.

[UPDATE 20170422] Reached my 11.7 goal with power to spare on 20170405. If I were willing to burn through another set of rear tires I'm sure 11.6 or better is possible. The full story of this track visit is in Post #52.

[Street Rubber]

I now believe that 11.7xxx is probably the best I can coax out of this street rubber, once I learn to feather the clutch enough to get my 60 ft time under 2 secs.

[Auto/Custom Launch Control]

I've abandoned all hope of Launch Lontrol (LC) getting me any improvements. Nearly all runs in my previous trips were staged with Custom Launch Control enabled. With the exception of the first 2 runs, this trip was all manual launch. While LC does work much better than the one-size-fits-all 5th Gen LC, it still has inconsistent results. It's not easy to determine what parameter to change (RPM/slip) in order to stick without bogging. Even when you get it just right for one pass, the next one will seldom be the same - maybe the track gets slicker or stickier or the temp drops.

To get good 60 ft times on street rubber the clutch must be feathered. Controlling wheel-slip by varying the timing is apparently what launch control is doing. This is just not responsive enough to handle the changes in torque and grip that the tires encounter, especially during launch. If there is any eLSD action employed with LC, I would expect it to work much better. If it sticks it's at such a low RPM that there's not enough torque. If it slips into higher RPM there's too much torque.

[Manual Launch]

I'm finding it easier to modulate clutch release and throttle input during launch to achieve better traction. It's going to take more seat time to get faster with full manual launch. Even with improved skills, however, I believe I'm approaching maximum street rubber times; even with a good burnout. On this trip my ETs were much more consistent. Average ET was much higher too, even with wheel slip I was getting on the launch and/or shifting to 2nd. My last pass saw temps drop into low 50's F. Even with a good burn-out I had to peddle the throttle in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

[Line Lock]

Line Lock should be available outside the Launch Control menu. I cursed the Launch Control menu on every manual lauch (9 of 11) on this trip. It's such a pain in the @$$ to press and hold the Stability Control button for 5 full seconds to disable Performance Traction Management (PTM) mode, turning off all the nannies. If I don't do this the engine bogs badly on manual launch. If someone knows a method to enable Line Lock without doing this, let me know. I felt like a jerk making everyone wait for me to stage while I was disabling the nannies, ever so slowly coasting to the staging gate. Doing a burn-out without line-lock does not sufficiently heat up the tires.

I'd be interested to hear other 6th Gen ZL1 drag strip stories. Except for one other guy on the fast list I'm apparently the only one doing this.

I'm always open to suggestions too, so sound off if you've got an idea that hasn't already been presented in one of the threads below.

The tech in these ZL1's is amazing! That trap speed is really impressive and as soon as you can figure out what tires to use to help put the power down, that car will break into the 10's or at least very low 11's.

At 125 mph, that's roughly a 10.95 corrected to sea level. Depending on what the DA is, it could be quicker. And that's based off numbers where you were and not brought to sea level, with a guesstimate of 3850 race weight.

Congrats! It'll only get quicker with better rubber and seat time!

Nice work Cal! I'm excited to see what the car will do with sticky drag radials. My prediction for the record will be 11.2. I think Drag Radials will net you a half second gain. If you can get your sixty foot in the 1.7 range that should drop your current ET by about 0.6. The MPH indicates that very low 11s are on the table for sure.....very high tens....who knows! I'm curious to see how the MPH changes with sticky rubber as often times wheel spin can yield faster trap times albeit lower ETs. Of course you may be able to even get a 1.6 60 foot on good track prep. For reference a full bolt on 2017 SS Camaro I raced Sunday did a 1.68 sixty foot on some good slicks with good track prep. His goal was 11.2s but he was mostly high 11.3s. That run was 11.376 at 120.64 mph.

Looking at my old time slips for reference (different car than yours of course) I was 11.05 at 126.19mph with a 1.76 60 foot on ok rubber on decent track prep. With good rubber I'm at 10.81 at 127.8 mph with a 1.60 60 foot. Another car at 11.17 was at 124.6 mph.

So I think right around 11.2 but I'm excited to see it. As you noted I think you are the only one doing it and putting it out there right now.

Epic post!

I see your best run was with a 2.0889 (2.1) 60'. This is the key.

in my previous 5th gen Camaro life I was able to get (as I remember) a couple of 1.95s on stock Pirellis (SS) but My best on the Goodyear Supercar tires was 2.00s (1LE and ZL1). On my current SS runflats I have done a couple of 1.93s.

I know the Goodyears on your car are of a different compound (tread?) than mine were. They really are not made for launching and excessive burnouts made mine very greasy and the sidewalls are stiff.

Have you tried a very light burnout just to get the water off and then a street start with the nannies off where you ease out the clutch @ 2K then feed in as much clutch as the tires will take. I bet that is harder to do in the ZL1 as the power comes on sooner/harder.

What amazes me is the lack of heat soak. I'm hot-lapping a lot and, at least at these ambient air temps, it doesn't seem to have much effect. Of course, a cooler engine will always run faster.

Thanks! My race weight is about 3500-3550, depending on fuel load. Usually I try to arrive with 1/4 tank (4-5 gal) and trunk/cabin empty.

You're talking about potential ET with slicks/DR's, right? I'm certain your numbers are within reach. This car produces so much torque that it's really a matter of keeping the tires planted. When I watch the PDR videos after each trip I see that it's always the high-torque points where I lose time.

Thanks man! I'm now officially looking for some 18x11 rims and slicks. Also looking for an extra set of stock rims and road track tires. You're tearing up the track with that kitty too buddy! Wish I could have seen that.

I'm excited too. There are only a couple of cars I've lined up with that could challenge those times, none of which are unmodified. With drag rims and rubber and a little more seat time I could see myself besting an unmodified Hellcat. Are there any unmodified manual trans Hellcats around? That would be interesting to watch - bone-stock 6th Gen ZL1 M6 vs bone-stock Hellcat M6, both with similar tire/rim combo. I think that would be a fair contest.

The new ZL1 has an unfair advantage over the tank a$$ Hellcat. They're heavy. My buddy has a '15 and my '16 SS will put up a fight until he gains significant traction.

As for wheels and tires, you should be able to clear 17's assuming the brakes aren't any bigger then the SS brakes. I clear a 17x10 Weld with Hoosier 28x10 slicks. Thing hooks great N/A and we'll see what happens with the ProCharger in April when the tracks open up. Get the 60' down a bit and watch the ET drop about double.

Careful now! My Hellcat is stock except the Legmaker CAI and Borla exhuast. Exhaust does nothing on these cars except change the sound note. Oh and the aluminum Drive shaft..lol. No real power mods though...Another fully stock Hellcat Charger was running the same times. Both of us on Drag Radials of course. If fact he stuck around till the end of the day when it cooled down even more and ran a 10.75...the lucky bastard!

I only know one manual Hellcat around. He lives in Raleigh and I don't think he races at all.

I wish I would have taken note of what slicks that 2017 SS was on...I checked and I don't have any pictures of him either. His 60ft times were good.

I'm stock except drag radials, cai, driveshaft. I'm assuming you're auto? He said m6 vs m6.

Are you sure about your weight ?? Car and Driver lists their test ZL1 at 3933 if I recall correctly.

Of course I'm auto Cal knows that. He's seen the car in person. I don't know why people think if you change one single thing on a car it suddenly wears this title like it's a tuner car. No pulleys, no tune, just what amounts to a noise maker to make the supercharger louder....the CAI, a noise maker to make the exhaust louder...Borla.. and a drive shaft as not to break the factory one using sticky tires on a prepped track. None of that change the performance numbers (except of course drag radials) but we are talking drag radial car to drag radial car...he is looking for slicks remember.

Exhaust does zero on the cat...some claim the LMI adds a little wheel hp but from what I've seen running with a bunch of other Cats its no factor. Anyway the point is I'm at factory power levels. This happens every time I bring up anything on this forum though.

Cal is a great guy with a great car and I like em all. So who cares.

Wasn't bashing just saying. They are small minimal mods no doubt and your getting great time's. I'd think you'd agree we don't have enough track info on lightly modded ZL1's to tell the OP ( to be careful ).

Sure but it's friendly banter with a guy I know...not just some random on the forum.

I sure wish more folks were reporting times and am a bit surprised they are not. I'm Jonesing to see what one will do on Drag Radials or Slicks.
