I wonder if this is the price model they're using? Cost is about the same as it was 25 years ago. I'll talk myself into buying one yet!
Your pretty much right about the costs being relatively the same if you factor inflation, etc. but I think folks spend as much on their mobile phone payment as they do a car payment. there are just so many other costs to be concerned with. Higher property taxes, higher insurance, gas prices, cost of groceries. I can't believe 4 sticks of butter cost like $5 bucks now, it will clog your artieries and cause you to go broke at the same time. So, when you factor in the costs of college and everything else for younger folks, a sports car just doesn't rank high on the list. If younger folks were going to buy new, it would make more sense for them to buy a $20k Honda Civic that has all the latest tech and safety features, reliability, lower insurance and great economy vs spending $35k plus on a Camaro.

Um, no... his math is most assuredly correct.

2010 to 2015 is indeed SIX model years. Count 'em:

2010
2011
2012
2013
2014
2015

Agree that sounds off. My first new car was a 1984 Monte SS, blue. It's MSRP was 13.5k and I had to pay full price to get it.

I was 21, had $5k down, and it was still a struggle. It was not common at all for someone so young to own a new sport car. Young guys buying new muscle was a 60s and early 70s phenomenon.

Camaro sales are down and have been depressed since the 6th Gen introduction primarily because of one reason - price. Plain and simple. It was overpriced for its market from day one.

And another thing...

I think that with the newer models being harder to work on that there is not the excitement of taking off your old 2 bbl carb and cast iron intake and then bolting on a new Edelbrock aluminum intake and a 650 cfm Holley along with a set of Hooker Headers, an Accel distributor, yellow plug wires, and a set of L60 rear tires like it was for us back in the day.

Today's generation gets excited if they can get a new app, not a new 1/2" craftsman ratchet and socket set or a new set of Snap On screw drivers.

I don't fault them - just look under the hood of today's cars. Can you even see the ground anymore?

I got that $15.4k from auto trader, have no good way to verify it.

I think one thing hurting the Camaro is that people with 5th gens are getting sticker shock when they are looking at upgrading. On my car, it stickered at around $43k - loaded 2SS RS Convertible. When I look at replacing it, I am at $51k without any options - and I want magnetic-ride. Since my car is worth around $20k now and not even paid off, it is making me think that used is the way to go.

If anyone hears about 2SS convertibles with big discounts, please let me know!

Thank you Raven87 and Thor142 for seeing it like it really is. Chevy sold a ton of Gen5s because they were affordable! I was very fortunate to afford a new '16 but really didn't want to pay $46,000 for mine but my 2010 SS was getting a lot of miles on it and needed tires, shocks and struts, and possibly a clutch too so I went on ahead and got the '16. And at this point I don't regret it. However I do on occasion miss my modded '10 though and it's LS3!

It did cost a lot of money to engineer the Camaro. I would think after the initial first few years Chevy would recoup enough money to lower the price. But it seems they just pocket the additional profit. just my 2 cents

Did it really though? Only GM knows for sure. With a chassis, powerplant, suspension and transmissions already in the parts bin I'm not so sure.

ya - base price. But back then the base engine was TBI, so it cost extra for the TPI motor, extra for AC, etc. The IROC package included all of that for about $3K or so. So anyway - the Z28 equivalent to a current 1SS back in 1990 era was about $18K. Your point still stands up however.

Just my opinion, but it comes from talking to dealers every day about this… it was said well above, they just don't see the benefit of putting big monthly payments into something but goes faster and turns better. Bingo.

As a potential early 20s buyer, there is nothing stopping me from pulling the trigger except for the ludicrous price tag that pops up when I'm done adding my "wants" on to the car.

"Wants" from my perspective are things that should already be on the higher trims such as the foot well lighting, lighting and convenience package, wing, HUD, Navigation and more (most luxury cars that start out at $35,000+ CDN already have these as standard)

I priced out a 2016 2LT online for close to $50,000 CDN where all it had was RS package, Convenience and Lighting package, NPP, Auto, v6, footwell lighting and black 20(21?) inch wheels. Even if I got a 2SS, the money I didn't have for overpaying on a 2SS in Canadian dollars will be spent on the amount of gas it eats. At this price I could get a much more sophisticated, refined German beast as Glen pointed out.

Les Stanford Chevrolet in Dearborn still has two 2016 2SS verts on their lot. I got $16,000 knocked off sticker when I bought mine a few weeks back from James Filmore. If you don't like either one they have left, James might be able to find one you like at another dealership and do a dealer trade for you.

I hate when people say price has nothing to do with or related to sales... if you told everyone they could get a fully loaded 2SS for 30k out the door with whatever options they wanted.. everyone and there sister would be trading in there 5th gens and mustangs and whatever else to get a new camaro. They would need 4 shifts at the plant working 8 days a week to keep up with sales.
