Tracking using onstar

Just wondering how to track my car while it's being shipped, I've seen people on here say they do it and I've reached out to onstar and they are completely useless.

Your dealer needs to activate it using your VIN and your home information, names, address, zip code, phone, e-mail. Once your dealer activates it you need to go to the OnStar site and request your information "Forgot account number" link and put in your e-mail address and they will send your account number to your e-mail and you go back and setup your account. Let me know if you cant get it work. PM me if you need more info, Or I post it on here. I did this the other day and was able to track my car.

Once you have your new car linked to your OnStar account then you need to load the OnStar Remote app into a cell phone or tablet. I don't know of a way to track the location from the OnStar web site.

OnStar can go into a hibernate mode if the car hasn't been driven for more than a week so your ability to track the car depends on how long it has been since the last time it was moved. I got lucky that my car was driven to load on the train the day that OnStar was activated. I tracked my car all the way from the factory with OnStar. There were times when OnStar couldn't connect to the car but normally it would work fine if I tried the next day. It seemed to work better during the day than at night.

From the OnStar Remote app you select the Map (Location Services) button. Then you select the blue car icon in the lower-right corner of the screen. You will be prompted to enter your OnStar PIN. Then OnStar will attempt to connect to the car and display the car's location. Sometimes OnStar will display an old location and you have to press the car icon again to refresh the location.

If you get an error that OnStar failed to connect to your car then go back and select the Vehicle Status (Diagnostics) button. Then you put your finger on the screen and "pull" the display down to refresh the status information. Sometimes it would update the status and sometimes it wouldn't. Either way I would go back to the Map and try to refresh the location.

Sometimes I would have to switch back and forth between Map and Status a few times to get the location but it normally worked. If not I would try again a few hours later or the next morning and it would work fine.

Good luck!

Thanks for that !! How do you link the car to onstar? That's the only part I'm confused about

this is what OnStar told me this AM

We understand the great anticipation, Cindy! Congratulations on your recent purchase. While it is possible to activate OnStar before receiving your new vehicle, we don't typically recommend it as it would mean using part of your free trial before you can fully utilize its benefits. Additionally, beginning your enrollment by pressing the blue button in your vehicle allows for an optimal set-up. If you have any other questions please let us know!

Best,

Amanda K.

I'd push the dealer to activate it anyways. It brought me a lot of peace of mind. Plus if you put your CC on file with Onstar when you get the car (initial call from the car on day of delivery) they will give you 2 extra months of the free trial.

How long can you use the remote start without a subscription?

Remote start? On the Onstar app? I have a manual so I don't know about that.

Ah, You have to have auto, and remote start installed. You are supposed to be able to start it from anywhere with the phone app. I just dont know what subscription service level. Hmmmm

Gotcha, it looks like all of the plans will let you do that.

Remote start is for five years. That's if you let your trial subscription expire. Somewhere in the small print it says basic services i.e. remote start is for 60 months.

My dealer tried but go the following:

"VIN is valid but cannot be located in this system. If this vehicle is equipped with OnStar. please have the customer press this blue OnStar button to complete the vehicle enrollment."

I didn't want to start a new thread. I am waiting for my car , supposedly it's in transit to Montreal. I managed to get the dealer to link the car with Onstar, I created an account and I have the app. The diagnostic status updates no problem and I can actually lock and unlock the car, But when I try go on map to find the location of the car it shows me my current location with the (current location ICON on the bottom right) , I called ONstar and they told me there is supposed to be a car icon on the map, but they couldn't help me find it :( any way to fix this?
